Oh dang, nice. Hytale - that ambitious Minecraft-like that Riot cancelled - is back in production, independent style. They've been rehiring the team and apparently have up to ten years of funding.

Early access release date coming soon.

Nice to hear some good news, at least.

Becky Heineman was to video games what Wendy Carlos was to music. The revolutionary that didn't need to make headlines or rush to any spotlight, but a quiet unstoppable force that inspired the young world of electronic games to be wonderful in a way only she had the guts to do.

We already miss you

Rebecca Heineman's last message was for people to look up her departed partner, Jennell Jaquays.

Jaquays was so influent to tabletop RPGs that "Jaquaysing" became a verb for designing complex, non-linear dungeons.

@nickoten.bsky.social wrote a great article on her:

in the early 2000s Rebecca took the time to chat over IRC with a teenaged and gender-confused Me on the practicalities of transition - in a time where being out as trans online was something that could get you socially ostracized. I owe her a lot for that and only hope I can pay it forward.

"CEO of peepee poopoo says..."

No that's ok. I don't think we need to hear what CEOs have to say anymore. It's been repeatedly shown they don't have anything smart to say due to being a class of person almost entirely disconnected from reality as it exists. That's quite enough of that.
"Surely there's a middle ground here?" The CEO of Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead says people "jump to extreme takes" when debating generative AI, and that there needs to be more nuance in the discussion.

A reminder that for every billion dollars made on PC gaming, Newell pockets $300m.

He keeps out of the public eye better than some billionaires, but he is still a libertarian billionaire, and billionaires should not exist.

I think it's beyond emblematic of games as a medium that the corporate 'games for change' shit was largely just an effort to manufacture the same air of prestige and social impact that films have, and that the actual devs involved were treated like shit by some territorial namedropping asshole
