The U.S. has two tsunami warning centers, both operated by NOAA. Employees were terminated from these centers today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center covers Hawaiʻi, and now it is less safe to be near the beach.

As I kid I wanted to work as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Alaska. Thanks to the timing of my birth, through good times and bad, I spent more than more than 30 years doing just that. Today, hundreds of similar dreams were shattered. To all of you, I am so sorry. #NOAA #Alaska

Folks are getting worked up about my recent claim that U.S. National Weather Service costs $3-4 per person/year. Well, some math: NWS budget of ~$1.3 billion, ~160 million tax returns, & ~345 million Americans means ~$8/taxpayer, or (indeed) ~$3.75/person. That's...quite a deal.
