AI is simply a scheme to make sure we burn all the proven reserves of fossil fuels, climate be damned. The only certain effect AI will have from an economic perspective is propping up the asset value of those reserves. Everything else is pie-in-the-sky and the finance people know it.
"In an internal memo from September, CEO Sam Altman said that OpenAI’s “audacious long-term goal is to build 250 gigawatts of capacity by 2033.” If Altman achieves this goal, OpenAI will need almost exactly as much electricity as India’s 1.5 billion people"

As the demands of AI grow, each generation of microchips requires more energy, minerals and water to produce, driving a ruinous cycle.

i think they said something similar when biden's build back better bill was split and leftists said "but they'll only pass the bad part." which they tried to do but people bullied manchin enough to pass some good things in the inflation reduction act.

along with more bad things.

he's right. if you need to make 11% return there's no way to build affordable housing. this is accurate. you can have for-profit housing, or housing people can actually afford to live in.

thanks for making it clear how the imperatives of capital are incompatible with meeting people's needs.
Canadian multimillionaire and Shark Tank guy Kevin O'Leary went on TV to say he's upset Zohran won't talk to him: "I and others who invest in real estate have tried to get a meeting to figure out what's rhetoric and what's policy. So far for me it's been crickets."

There are two main ways to define centrism: the consensus among those who spend the most on elections, and the consensus of those who are eligible to vote in elections.

The Acela corridor media will always reflect the former, but what wins elections in more places is the latter.
🎧LEVER TIME: How voters forced Dems to reject their corporate-coddling political & media elites & learn that populism is centrism.

Election 2025 was a rejection of the oligarch orthodoxy enforced by Democratic leaders & corporate media.

Why Populism Is Now Centrism
Democratic strategists say the party needs to move to the center. This week’s election winners found it — but not where the party was looking.

At the risk of sounding petty, calls for Democratic unity going forward are all well and good, but let’s not forget that the reason Cuomo ran against Mamdani in the first place was a last-ditch effort by the New York Democratic Party to ratfuck their duly elected nominee.

So many people were detained extrajudicially, were tortured, or died because of Dick Cheney. You can't get to the danger we're in now without everything he did. The weapons he helped forge are ones we need to take away from U.S. presidents forever.

Cool that renewables have become the cheapest source of energy in the world just as a bunch of reactionary-centrist US pundits have taken up the right-wing "climate vs. cheap energy" framing.

this, by the way, is the manner in which the global north will experience climate change at first. prices going up, especially for food.

the other way will be massively increasing migration from poor countries by people whose food we're buying up & whose homes have been destroyed.

The U.S. spending $20B to bail out Argentina seems completely random until you find out that hedge fund billionaires bet on their right wing government’s doomed economic plan and could lose a lot of money.

So this is actually a U.S. hedge fund bailout which explains why Trump cares.

i don't need a bunch of robed clowns to tell me what ICE does is unconstitutional. i can fucking read the plain language of the fourth amendment. don't tell me there's this one magical agency that can ignore it for the 80% of the population that's in their jurisdiction.
I think it is about time that Democrats started familiarizing themselves with Lincoln’s response to Dred Scott instead of accepting the tacit premise that whatever a bare majority of the Supreme Court decides, dictates our constitutional fate
Segregationists spoke of the “long civil rights movement” as the “Second Reconstruction” and for inspiration turned to the Redemptionists, who declared war on the first Reconstruction and after many decades of legal and extralegal efforts Installed
