Just a nerd without any good answers to the real problems. Sorry.
or I should just pay more attention, lol.

in any case the networks gone did firefly dirty.

as each small family grew into social groups, and social groups grew into villages, towns, cities, it became increasingly complex, and different groups held different norms as to what was ethical or moral; and I suggest that religions appropriated rather than developed ethics.
February 12, 2026 at 6:08 AM
ethics and morality came from humans being social... long before religion ever came into it. ethics and morality were the behavioral code that guided social interactions, allowing a people to interact in a fair and reliably predictable manner.

In any case, I suggest that morals are subjective; and religion is not in any way a source of moral authority.

In the same way that grumpy bronze age shepherds spitballing why lightning existed and ultimately saying "must be god" is not a good explanation for lightning.

the cult of dionysus was rather hedonistic- Dionysus was worshiped with rights of esctatic dancing, drunkeness and probably lots of sex. the mixing of classes during the festivals was also subversive.

Compare that to Apollo's cult which was down right prudish. Or, indeed Paul's teachings.
February 12, 2026 at 6:08 AM
I'm not sure it really did. The problem with religion being a source of moral authority is that outside of some very broad strokes- don't kill without justification, don't steal (from the rich), and do what we (the priests) tell you (or else.)- they're very contradictatory.

Now imagine, instead, that Haven was the first episode- the one with Troi's betrothed showing up with artwork he thought was her but turns out to be a plague-carrying hottie from his dreams.

We'd be very confused by the interactions between Ryker and Troi.
February 12, 2026 at 5:56 AM
it may be an imperfect understanding, but like in Farpoint Station, with TNG, we learn that Ryker is the younger, capable officer whose brashand a bit-by-the-book on some things; but also totally a rake; and that there was something that had gone on between Ryker and Troi.

generally, you need to at least introduce your characters before you get into the heart of your story, right? doesn't really matter what the story is about.

Like, every tv show starts off introducing us to the characters first so we have a vague understanding of the motivations.

MAGA and the GOP project more than all the movie theaters combined.
a close up of a movie projector projecting a film
Alt: a close up of an old film movie projector projecting a film. The lighting is dark, so that’s seen is the machine with two reels turning and its flickering beam of light as it projects.

Every minute we spend defending ourselves from accusations of antisemitism, Herzog’s not having to defend his own self from actually legitimate accusations of bigotry and broad atrocities.

It’s why he’s gaslighting the shit out of everyone.

If he believes it, he’s huffing his own supply.

The face you make when you get a snootfull of something unpleasant, but the humans just keep eating it. (green stuff. bleck...)
February 12, 2026 at 1:55 AM
I'm sure it definitely did improve one's mood. how could you spend three hours *anywhere* with such a good boi and not feel better than you would have otherwise?
February 12, 2026 at 1:50 AM
I'm a little curious. How do you feel about Dionysus's cult as a source of moral authority?

or maybe any of the religions that offered human sacrifice?
February 12, 2026 at 12:11 AM
Same reason bab5 didn’t get the initial viewership it deserved- the network it ran on decided to air it directly opposite of ds9 and most sci-fi fans could only watch one show- they went with the familiar name.
February 11, 2026 at 10:02 PM
A significant part of why it “failed” was because the networks fucked around like they do with most sci fi.

The first episode that aired (train job?) was meant to air a bit later and people were lost on character development.

Pretty sure this is from the movie though.

lol, yeah. She was definitely a nutter. Most doxies are 10 pounds of crazy in a 1 pound bag- but that’s the good kind of crazy.
February 11, 2026 at 8:55 PM
For anybody wondering, discord’s move to require facial recognition or id to verify age isn’t about protecting children- it’s about mass surveillance.

And we should probably check the Epstein files for anyone who says otherwise.

what's astounding is how often she got away with it. (the cycle repeats every hour like a repeatable quest.)
February 11, 2026 at 8:19 AM
So dachshund love to burrow (in the same way Goldies and retrievers love water,) So she always made a giant nest out of stuff.

This particular doxie loved to go out into 3ft deep snow, get soaking wet and freezing cold, only to come in and burrow under YOUR warm blanket for some snuggles.

The loomer clones are like orange cats.

Except the first thing any of them didn’t the one looney brain cell was huff paint.

So, like, yeah.
February 11, 2026 at 6:13 AM
There is no need to take my word for it. You can find any installer who will be able to confirm it.

(And you absolutely can install the system yourself)
February 11, 2026 at 1:51 AM
Since the data never leaves your control, you don’t have to worry about who gets to see it.

You decide that.

This is different from Ring and other similar “cloud” systems that send your data to their servers, who then give not-actually-your-data to the cops with very little questions asked.
February 11, 2026 at 1:51 AM
You’re being paranoid.

You asked a question and I gave an answer. Outside cheap residential set up’s, IP cameras are the standard.

They work by connecting into a computer network (frequently one just used for that,) and send their video feed to a server (with shit tons of data storage,)
February 11, 2026 at 1:51 AM
Ip cameras (basically they’re on a network,).

You’ll have to set up a dvr system to record, but the data never leaves your house.

Ultimately, if the data leaves it’s available to cops and feds in some way.

They are quite a bit more expensive, but they’re not being sold as loss leaders.
