My best friend and I unwittingly got each other the same book for our birthdays (which are within a few days of each other). It was Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh.
Today I bought some Harry & David pears & an amaryllis at Trader Joe’s for my mom, only to get home and discover that today she had also stopped at Trader Joe’s and bought Harry & David pears & an amaryllis for me.

An interesting thought, I imagine there would probably be complicated social dynamics between the young career-track students and the old hobby-track students
a mildly crank take is that as people live longer and universities struggle with demographic issues, colleges should offer a kind of somewhat-separate retiree-PhD path. Like it's still an actual degree, you still do real coursework and a dissertation, but you pay tuition instead of teaching classes

“Lave” is perhaps the most fanfiction word I know, like I’m genuinely not sure I’ve *ever* encountered it outside of fanfiction and novels written by fanfiction authors
words in a published romance novel intimate scene that immediately make me ring the ‘i know what you are’ bell: mewl, croon, keen, lave, syrupy, intrusion

also this book suffers from what im going to call "anime syndrome" in that any potential place for subtlety, nuance, and trusting your reader is replaced with a hammer of TELL DONT SHOW

People love to say that being single gives you so much freedom, and I’m sure in some ways that’s true, but it also creates logistical difficulties around everything from accessing health care to what kind of clothes you can wear.
This morning when I was in the coffee shop waiting for my order a woman came up to me and asked if I could do up the button on the back of her shirt because she lives alone and doesn't have anyone to help her
It made me kind of sad but also glad that I could do a small nice thing for a stranger

Now I’m thinking about what would be the most inappropriate quotes from Angels in America to read at a wedding
(And this is why I chose this particular reading for a wedding between an astrophysicist and condensed matter physicist. Also because we watched Angels in America on one of our first dates and just couldn't figure out how to use anything from that at our wedding but this Tony Kushner is perfect.)
