Or when a headline mentions a famous man by name but leaves his non-famous wife unnamed. They do in fact do the same thing with famous women who have non-famous male partners.

Same thing when people see a headline referring to an unnamed “grandmother” and say “They would never say this about a man!” Yes they would. Which you would know if you bothered to run a search on news articles with “grandfather” in the headline.

There is no shortage of instances of actual sexism, we don’t need to invent imaginary ones!

obviously him too but I don’t think anyone was in any danger of thinking that we would welcome him into the fold

We each brought out a wrapped package, and she got a funny look and said “I think we might’ve gotten each other the same thing.” I said I didn’t think so because they weren’t quite the same size. Turned out one of us bought the hardcover and one of us bought the paperback.

I think they *want* it to be true that AI is bad for the environment, bc they hate AI for other reasons and they think environmental concerns are a trump card in arguments. If you invented a type of AI that was good for the environment, they’d just be mad at you for taking away their trump card.

I’m reminded of California’s Prop 8 in 2008, where all the economic analysis suggested that keeping gay marriage would be good for the economy bc people spend a lot of money on weddings, but voters voted to ban gay marriage anyway. People like oppressing outgroups more than they like having money.

A gay man once told me, “My parents don’t care that I’m gay, they care that I’m a f**.” (They were okay with him dating men but wished he had a more normatively masculine gender presentation).

I did sometimes at childhood/teen sleepovers, and once in my 30s on a group trip (there simply weren’t enough beds not to share). Not a big deal but I’m sure we’d all have preferred separate beds. So, not 100% normal but also not super weird.

I think she was primarily just trying to write a viral article, which she succeeded at.

He has one daughter in addition to two sons, unfortunately

The funny thing to me is that I actually never see liberals reference it, I exclusively see leftists decry it. IME the actual fans of the show don’t even talk about it anymore, it’s just this catch-all bugbear for Twitter leftists. I see plenty of “liberal cringe” at protests, but never WW signs

I once mentioned to a leftist friend how weird it is that leftists constantly complain about a tv show that stopped airing (at the time) 15 years ago, and he absolutely went off on me, reacted as though I’d said the show was good, and strongly implied that Sorkin caused the subprime mortgage crisis

Now that I think about it, it seems surprising that there aren’t more (any?) musical adaptations of Shakespeare plays, since a) they’re in the public domain, and b) so much of the text is already metered, it’d make the lyricist’s job a lot easier

A friend went on a rant about the bad politics of The West Wing and then admitted that she’d never actually watched The West Wing.

He went to Ohio State and then Yale. (But yeah either way he’s a complete piece of shit.)
