Run, don't walk.

Sobering news for a lot of top Democrats, tonight, as they realize people would prefer they actually fucking do something.

Read the editorial piece. It's a good summary of how we got to the point where AV translators are giving up on the profession (today I started the day with the soul-crushing news of yet another dear colleague doing it), while audiences are being conned out of their money for crappy localization.

Happy #InternationalTranslationDay! 🪶

To every translator fighting for credits, legitimacy or against AI right now: remember 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁.

Caring for the words of others while making sure everyone can enjoy & understand them fully is art, and it's beautiful.
Your craft is beautiful 🤍

Merry Cannella, Max Deryagin, and Rachel Jones talked to The Guardian about what AI is doing to our profession and to audiences. We all deserve better.
#AVT #SDH #accessibility
Subtle's chair Max Deryagin and committee members Merry Cannella and Rachel Jones spoke to journalist Lucy Carter recently about the creative role of SDH authors and AI's detrimental impact on our working conditions and quality, and their interview is out in The Guardian!

Gracias, Don Mario.

I'm a broken record, I know, but sharing a project with a QCer who has my back and with whom I can chat about everything translation and plot-related while working on each episode is DA BEST.

Graham Greene was one of those actors whose presence was absolutely, 100% guaranteed to make whatever movie or TV show he was in better. He added instant gravitas and authority, reliable stealthy humor and depth beyond whatever was on the page.

Should've been Emmy nominated for "Reservation Dogs."
Graham Greene, ‘Dances With Wolves’ Actor, Dies at 73
The actor’s role as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film ‘Dances with Wolves’ earned him a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.

I'm preparing to publish the next installment of AI Killed My Job. This time, the focus will be on translators.

If you or someone you know has had a translation job (including translator, interpreter, game localizer, etc) impacted by AI, and you'd like to share, please do: AIkilledmyjob@pm.me
AI is being used to justify firing workers at major tech companies, leaving those that remain to pick up the pieces.

AI code is being shoveled into crucial Google products, replacing trainers at TikTok, and worse.

This, in tech workers' own words, is how AI is killing jobs in Silicon Valley.
AI Killed My Job: Tech workers
Tech workers at TikTok, Google, and across the industry share stories about how AI is changing, ruining, or replacing their jobs.

Again: Viewers, critics, cinephiles,
BE LOUD!!
Demand quality!
Yours is probably the only voice that matters to those corporations (besides their shareholders'...)
#HumanNotMachines
I've spoken to LSP executives who "claim" that Disney, MGM, etc. "don't want quality subtitles", which is why they're now using MTPE for subtitles. These entertainment companies think their audiences will be OK with "a certain level of mediocrity".

We consumers need to demand quality.
Full support to our fellow translators from AVTE.

While not being surprising coming from such a profit-oriented transnational corporation, it is still utterly disappointing and disgusting.

Using MT is a conscious 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 they make.

Translation isn't expensive. In fact, it's frequently the biggest return on investment:

For the top 100 grossing movies of all time, 50% of their profits were made outside of English, and they spent less than 1% of their budget on localization.

I've spoken with executives in the loc industry who have admitted straight to me that they're intentionally publishing sub-par translations because audiences "are okay with them". Read: will still pay for a service even if the translation is bad.

We need to prove to them that we won't.

Leed todo este hilo. Please and thank you.
