Simple living in a log cabin along the Snake River, plus catch-&-release fly-fishing. Out West.

A Snake River Fall-run Brown #Trout. Great run this Fall! Just my way of fly-fishing, I use barbless hooks & don't remove the fish from water. Quick photo, flick of the wrist & off the trout goes. I don't pass judgement on others, simply my way of fishing.
Yesterday on the Snake River. Had watched a mink hunting along opposite bank for about 10 min, then headed back up, home. Stopped for photo, as liked the color contrast of the dry, exposed river stones, to the orange/brown, then green & finally blue of deeper water.

A surge of unseasonably warm air is resulting in near-record to record-breaking high temperatures across a broad region of the Central and Southern Plains.

The combination of this unusual warmth, low relative humidity, and the strong, gusty winds will create favorable fire weather conditions.

Have reached our hi of 60° for the day, dropping to upper 30s tonight. Gray overcast, breezy & chance of rain this afternoon. Fall color is gone & lawn is heading into winter dormancy. Cow & calf moose have taken up residence at back of place & surrounding area. All in all, a quiet day.

A very stark reminder why no one goes out on foot after dark in Churchill, Manitoba. This mom and her cubs came just off the beach and behind the town complex. The Polar Bear Alert staff gently herded them away from town to keep everyone safe. #mammals #BearSeason2025 🌿

Now that my buddy retired from farming, we have more time to get out & explore. Jet boat trip down the Salmon River & fresh wolf tracks on a sandbar. Knife is 4-1/2 inches in length. Whether tracks, howling or a sighting, any wolf encounter makes for a great day!

Another G4 Aurora forecast tonight & it's...overcast! 🤦🏻‍♂️ Dropping into low 30s, so starting a fire after hi today of 52°. Unless it clears, don't think the Northern Lights will break thru at my location. For those who are in the clear, hope it's a repeat spectacular one for you!

Forecast is for another good evening of Northern Lights. Last night, it started about 20 min after sunset. This was our 1st photo over barn. In fact, 1st wondered if we were seeing some kind of afterglow from the sun. But, green color lower on horizon was clincher. So intense, it lit up clouds.

My fave photo of tonight's aurora borealis display. Looking at that fire in the sky against the background of the cosmos, it does provide for a rather...sobering perspective...of our simple "blip" in time existence compared to the overall universe.

So far, 4 hrs of sky magic! Just took this photo from front deck of cabin. According to aurora borealis forecast, tomorrow night may be even more intense.

The purplish hue of this current Aurora burst is new for us to see.

From home, along the Snake River in Idaho a bit ago. Aurora borealis is definitely lighting up the sky tonight!

Fall waterfowl migration in full force! One of my fave times of the yr. Today, reading on back deck, as well as, watching & hearing flocks of Canada & Snow Geese (with one blue morph), plus both Tundra & Trumpeter Swans overhead. Photos of Trumpeter Swans in flight.

3 cords seasoned ponderosa & lodgepole pine delivered today. Behind is another 1-1/2 cords & then a couple cords of cottonwood that fell in backyard 3 yrs ago. Despise cottonwood in the Blaze King: pain to split, ⬆️ ash & poor heat output. But, not letting go to waste. Should be set for winter!

I limit myself to a single "project" per day. This AM, was trimming spruce, aspen & juniper overhangs along drive. Will have a bonfire of trimmings once snow arrives. Found this in pasture: respiratory frost at a burrow entrance: ground squirrel, ermine? Same area hosted an ermine couple yrs ago.

Good Snake River Morning! 22° outside headed to 42° & no wind, thanks to hi pressure off West Coast. AM fire's stoked. Now, to put the coffee on.

Back home from AM's walk-around. Most likely this past season's Yellow Warbler nest. I'm balancing up on a fallen log & nest is about 9-10' hi in a wild rose bush. Snake River 40' away to the left. Birds this AM: Trumpeter Swans, Snow Geese & Townsend's Solitaires. 2 whitetails & a porcupine.

Morning coffee & biscotti. 38° outside, overcast, drizzling along river & snowing up in area mtns. A mountain lion moved in about 2 wks ago & scattered all the deer. Found a couple scrapes & tracks. Finally, saw doe & twins come thru yest, maybe cat has moved on. Will take a walk in a bit.

Hoping tonight's election results are a firm indicator that these words are as true for the Democratic Party going forward, as they were for the entire USA, 84 yrs ago.

Back deck coffee, an hr & half ago. Warmer this AM at 41°, forecast 62° for the hi. Headed for a walk down to the Snake, binocs in hand, to see what's out & about.

Went down to the river to look, a bit ago. And, saw prob one of the last Baetis hatches for the yr. Thousands floating downstream right at margin of brown/green.water. Those circular ripples were trout feeding along that line. At least 5 in this photo alone. Sometimes, fun to just sit & watch!

Did some research yest. Past 5 yrs had a pocket gopher colony in side pasture. Past 3 yrs, chipmunk colony near yard. Last winter, there was deer mice pop explosion. By early June all 3 disappeared, in single WK! Looks like most likely culprit was Yersinia pestis, plague. Always around in the wild.
