Simple living in a log cabin along the Snake River, plus catch-&-release fly-fishing. Out West.
Nice to have a good neighbor! Made quick work of a project I needed done. Retired from farming this yr but kept some essential equip. Then, we walked down to the river & were watching a stretch of water when a 20" brown made a full body leap! He'll be tomorrow's "project" for us!

Guiding neighbor in his Cat & found this narrowleaf cottonwood with oyster mushroom clumps from 20' to 40' high, on the trunk. Tree is prob dead, but where it falls won't be on my perimeter trail. So, just let nature do its thing.

Enjoying the AM. Right now, 39° headed to 42°. Trumpeter Swans & Canada Geese flying over. Coffee & biscotti, before neighbor arrives with his Articulated Cat to do bulldozer trail clearing for me of some wind-downed trees. Hrs & hrs of what would be chainsaw work, will be done in minutes!

Hockey Night in Idaho! The Idaho Spud Kings play Casper Wyoming Warbirds tonight. A 75 mi trip, but worth it! Wife teaches youth hockey ice skating.

42° with wind-chill of 37°. Kept getting distracted from fly-fishing by flyovers of Trumpeter Swans, Mallards & Canada Geese. Beautiful blues of both sky & water.

Remind me again the number that was quoted from Oval Office for price per gallon of gas. Had to make a town run & this was price I paid/gal a half hr ago.

Bringing up more firewood & noticed low fog moving thru River Bottoms. Sight distance before denser fog is an easy 30 yd lob pass away.

Good AM Bluesky! Sun just started rising bit ago along Snake River. Got AM fire stoked, coffee made & having egg/bacon salad & biscotti. It's a gray day outside, 34° headed to 41°, teens by Mon. Glimpsed a muledeer doe & photo thru double pane glass, so fuzzy, but had to be quick before left yard.

Home after dinner out this evening. 41° dropping to 27° tonight. Highs reaching 42° with lows to upper teens next few days. Just fired up the woodstove & chill is already gone. Agenda tomorrow: press a cup of coffee, wife's biscotti & maybe swing a streamer thru some deeper pools on the Snake.

Back deck sunset this evening. Dropping to 36° tonight. Just heard a jet boat go by on the Snake, headed to downstream boat ramp while still light enough to navigate. Supper's in oven, woodfire warmth inside. Headed in after a bit.

A walk down to the river earlier. Canada Geese & Tundra Swans flew over, fresh moose tracks along river bank. Diffuse lighting brought out bank vegetation color. Now, 47°, gray, overcast & drizzling outside. Inside, warm & dry with hot tea, biscotti, woodfire & a book.

Yesterday on the Snake River. Had watched a mink hunting along opposite bank for about 10 min, then headed back up, home. Stopped for photo, as liked the color contrast of the dry, exposed river stones, to the orange/brown, then green & finally blue of deeper water.

Have reached our hi of 60° for the day, dropping to upper 30s tonight. Gray overcast, breezy & chance of rain this afternoon. Fall color is gone & lawn is heading into winter dormancy. Cow & calf moose have taken up residence at back of place & surrounding area. All in all, a quiet day.

Now that my buddy retired from farming, we have more time to get out & explore. Jet boat trip down the Salmon River & fresh wolf tracks on a sandbar. Knife is 4-1/2 inches in length. Whether tracks, howling or a sighting, any wolf encounter makes for a great day!

Another G4 Aurora forecast tonight & it's...overcast! 🤦🏻‍♂️ Dropping into low 30s, so starting a fire after hi today of 52°. Unless it clears, don't think the Northern Lights will break thru at my location. For those who are in the clear, hope it's a repeat spectacular one for you!

Forecast is for another good evening of Northern Lights. Last night, it started about 20 min after sunset. This was our 1st photo over barn. In fact, 1st wondered if we were seeing some kind of afterglow from the sun. But, green color lower on horizon was clincher. So intense, it lit up clouds.

My fave photo of tonight's aurora borealis display. Looking at that fire in the sky against the background of the cosmos, it does provide for a rather...sobering perspective...of our simple "blip" in time existence compared to the overall universe.

So far, 4 hrs of sky magic! Just took this photo from front deck of cabin. According to aurora borealis forecast, tomorrow night may be even more intense.

The purplish hue of this current Aurora burst is new for us to see.

From home, along the Snake River in Idaho a bit ago. Aurora borealis is definitely lighting up the sky tonight!

On this Veterans Day...thank you Dad & Uncles. Sure miss you guys & your generation!

Fall waterfowl migration in full force! One of my fave times of the yr. Today, reading on back deck, as well as, watching & hearing flocks of Canada & Snow Geese (with one blue morph), plus both Tundra & Trumpeter Swans overhead. Photos of Trumpeter Swans in flight.

3 cords seasoned ponderosa & lodgepole pine delivered today. Behind is another 1-1/2 cords & then a couple cords of cottonwood that fell in backyard 3 yrs ago. Despise cottonwood in the Blaze King: pain to split, ⬆️ ash & poor heat output. But, not letting go to waste. Should be set for winter!

I limit myself to a single "project" per day. This AM, was trimming spruce, aspen & juniper overhangs along drive. Will have a bonfire of trimmings once snow arrives. Found this in pasture: respiratory frost at a burrow entrance: ground squirrel, ermine? Same area hosted an ermine couple yrs ago.
November 8, 2025 at 5:07 PM
Good Snake River Morning! 22° outside headed to 42° & no wind, thanks to hi pressure off West Coast. AM fire's stoked. Now, to put the coffee on.
