I spoke at the same @wonkhe.bsky.social conference as him once shortly after Brexit and he properly sounded like someone trying to explain and find solutions. His radicalisation has been something to behold but Ian hits on a great point which is that he also comes across as a bit mediocre.

What on earth are these people on and how the living f have we allowed them to become so influential in our society. They ought to be the kind of people you slowly back away from in the pub having inadvertently struck up a conversation with them but instead we have elevated them to our upper chamber
Someone from the Tories’ Lords team really needs to change Sharron Davies’ X log in.

As an aside, how *would* 15 minute cities be “thrust on us overnight”?

“Someone should look into this thing I just made up”. And people vote for this drivel.
Trump lies (or is confused, or both): "China does most of everything they're doing with coal. They make the windmills, but they don't have a lot of wind farms. Somebody ought to look at that."

Doesn't surprise me, sadly. Even ignoring 'digital', we have 18% with "very low literacy" levels according to the OECD PIAAC survey and it's worse amongst older people. Numeracy improving but from lower base

Just heard that 1 in 4 working age adults in England don’t have what we’re described as “essential skills” in language, numeracy and digital & the stat has completely blown my mind as well as reinforcing what a very particular bubble I inhabit that this issue was hitherto completely invisible to me

As we grieve for Alex Pretti and Renee Good in MN, please do not forget Victor Manuel Diaz, who died in ICE custody after being taken from here. And all others who have died in their custody.
36-year-old Nicaraguan national Victor Manuel Diaz died in ICE custody on Jan. 14 at Camp East Montana in El Paso.

The Texas Nicaraguan Community on FB reports that his mom last heard from him on Jan. 6, when he told her he was planning to go to Minneapolis to start work in a restaurant. 1/3

From “thank you for your service” and gold star family status for their own to “we never really needed them” for everyone else.

A disgusting human being.
imagine being the father or mother or son or daughter or sibling of one of those brave British troops who died in Afghanistan, and having to listen to this crass ignorance

Yuk. A link to the Brooklyn Beckham stuff appeared on my news tab and I clicked it and now I feel really cross with myself because (a) I don’t care; (b) I don’t care; and (c) I really really don’t care.
