Blimey! Last day of teaching after taking VR. 25 years has gone like a flash really (but clearly not when I look in the mirror!) 25 years of surviving college funding cuts, redundancies, ever-increasing workload and teaching through covid.

THREAD: Seeing as we are a year into the Labour government it is probably worth looking at why, and how, the last 12 months have been a masterclass in why communications led policy, policy based on what sounds good, make for very bad outcomes for a lot of people. 1/20

For the past 48 hours, thousands of TikTok users have been posting and sharing videos ostensibly about "cute winter boots." But the phrase is not about footwear. It's algospeak code being used to discuss fighting back against Trump and his draconian immigration policies.
TikTok's 'cute winter boots' trend explained
As the U.S. government seeks to enact stricter controls over online speech, TikTok users are adopting more coded 'algospeak' to criticize and resist the government

Excellent summary of 'skibidi' by The Guardian

"Someone made a video about a toilet with a man’s head sticking out of it, and now there is an army of toilet men, and sometimes the toilets fight cameras. That’s why nine-year-olds fill every moment of silence by yelping the word skibidi."
Skibidi, sigma and slay: the most popular kids’ slang – and what it means
According to Oxford University Press, these three words are beloved of kids. Unfortunately, one makes no sense whatsoever

I've become slightly obsessed with anachronyms; words that are used in an anachronistic way, by referring to something that was appropriate in a former time.

E.g. to clock in, to film something, to hang up the phone, to dial a number.

I've collected a list.
