This year I was diagnosed with a preventable form of cancer. What I found out startled and infuriated me: HPV+ cancers like mine disproportionately affect my home region of Appalachia.

We are being failed by the medical establishment yet again. So, I wrote about it: dailyyonder.com/commentary-h...
Commentary: HPV Cancer Rates Are Higher in Appalachia. Wish I Had Known. | The Daily Yonder
There was no privacy when I was told I might die. In November, I complained about a sore throat during my annual physical with my primary care physician.

I literally turn the tv off when Harry Enten comes on. I find him not just incredibly grating, but his analysis is vapid and offers nothing of value

Is this just that the stroke literally broke his brain, do you reckon, or is something else going on here? Was he *always* Trumpian and we just... refused to see it?

All available evidence suggests Musk is a white supremacist

What strikes me about this, though, is how they are implicitly - perhaps unwittingly - proving a point many of us on the progressive left have been making for, oh I don't know, 250 years: the way America treats minorities is very unfair
I wonder if anyone will revisit their charitable interpretations of Elon’s definitely-not-a-Nazi-salute

Storied newspaper chain McClatchy recently shuttered its Washington bureau and laid off staff. Now its told union leaders it wants to publish AI-generated stories without human review and create AI impersonations of reporters for podcasts.

McClatchy’s Machine Mindset
A recent meeting with McClatchy executives left union leaders stunned and deeply alarmed about how the company wishes to implement A.I. in the newsroom, Status has learned.

This is absolutely a huge problem in protest culture and it’s a major obstacle to allowing protests to grow. People are turning up to protests to fight Trump, ICE, recent abuses. Invariably the speakers are going off about 200 years of stolen land or US imperialism, and many of those people leave.
I really agree with this—my stance is not “don’t bring in other issues” but “for the love of god, do NOT bring in other issues in a ham-fisted way that doesn’t illuminate the connection for someone who didn’t already agree”

I have seen ppl who were highly motivated to protest a particular thing…

Labour fell to third in a recent poll. The next election is years away so panicking is pointless, but the direction of travel since the '24 GE has been decidedly rightward. Starmer needs to go

Even if he does, though, the rightward tick of the culture these last 15 years won't be undone overnight

Going back to when Justin Webb as the BBC's America correspondent during the W Bush era believed he had to fight what he viewed as institutional anti-Americanism, it is always worth taking a closer look at the think tank, media and social media circles shaping the worldview of senior broadcasters
Heard similar on Radio 4 this morning. Was really, really odd. Talking about accusations of fraud involving Somalis. Not sure what - at all - had to do with ICE shooting a woman did.

Felt like classic 'some say it's rainy outside, others say it's sunny' faux impartiality
Why’s BBC R6 news explicitly highlighting ethnicity of local Minneapolis councillor talking about woman shot by ICE? Can’t see any reason his Somali heritage is relevant. Same time repeats trump lies re ‘self-defence’ despite footage showing otherwise. Another eg @petergeoghegan.bsky.social

We all saw the video. The Trump regime is lying. And any journalist or newsroom refusing to say that does not deserve your trust

Renee Good was extrajudicially executed by masked armed agents of the Trump regime. There is no "both sides" to this. The video was clear. Trust your eyes, not the spin

Indeed. The fact that she was a white American matters more than many will like to admit. She was also, I believe, in a same-sex relationship which will be used by many on the American right to dehumanise her. It's a sad state of affairs. And honestly, I don't know what to do anymore.

Makes me ill. I expected this from the USA, but I genuinely thought the UK might - MIGHT - reject this nonsense. The BNP's election to the European Parliament in 2009 worried me, but it seemed like a one-off. Brexit upset but didn't surprise me, but I thought the fever might break. Now? I despair
January 8, 2026 at 11:10 AM
There is, I agree, and morally and ethically there is no difference. A life is a life

The escalation is killing an American citizen. The regime is showing no one is safe from its masked thugs. Not even innocent *citizens*

Trump is willing to kill not just "invaders" (his word), but his own people

I hope you're wrong. I fear you're right. I'm an American, but I've spent a lot of time in the UK both for personal pleasure (it's my second home at this point) and professionally (I cover transatlantic politics and study late 19c/early 20c Britain). The UK used to be my sanctuary. Now? I don't know

there is no reason for ICE to exist. immigrants aren’t doing anything wrong by trying to live and work and provide for their loved ones. I don’t care how people got here. if they want to be here that’s good. leave them alone.

Dems are still approaching this wrong. I just saw a BBC host ask a state senator if Tim Walz should call out the National Guard.

He says, "No, because Minnesotans know how to protest peacefully."

THAT'S NOT WHO THE GUARD IS FOR. THE GUARD IS TO PROTECT THE PROTESTERS FROM LAWLESS FEDERAL AGENTS.

As we grieve Good's murder, it is also worth reflecting on who she represented: ordinary citizens standing up to an increasingly oppressive state.

More bravery and dignity than scores of people in American media, government, or industry.
“Three years is a long time to resist and to endure with all our might. But it is not long enough for them to triumph, not the way they’re going. We’ve got this. It’s going to be hard, there will be more losses, but we will beat them in the end.” www.liberalcurrents.com/murder-in-mi...

The No Kings rallies are vital shows of strength, but the day-to-day spontaneous acts of ordinary people stepping up with their voices, cameras, whistles whenever ICE invades their neighbourhood represent the heart and soul of this country. They're the hope, they're the faith, they're the charity.
