Incredible!
Music bringing people together for millennia! 🪈 🎶

About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, this flute was made from a swan’s wing bone. It is one of the World’s oldest known musical instruments!

Awful news about a brilliant, lovely feller
This is hard to do, because I know how hard it will hit.

At the request of his wonderful wife Bea, I write this thread to let followers & admirers of Jamie Normington @movingslowly.bsky.social (formerly @TLWforCumbria on Twitter) who may not have heard the news know that he died last week.

Magnificence
I just spent the evening photographing Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling with a 4x5 camera. If even two of the eight sheets I exposed are even in the ballpark of usable I'll be amazed, but it was tremendous fun.

Love this. And dandelion is another good one
A reminder of a pretty etymology to brighten the day. The ‘daisy’ takes its name from the Old English ‘dæges ēage’, ‘day’s eye’, because it opens its petals at dawn, and closes them again at dusk.

STOP what you are doing, find some headphones or a secluded location, and watch this. I am crying with laughter and admiration at an idea seen through to its (nearly) bitter end. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD3Q... Sound--as they say--on.

Excellent thread
On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked,

"If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?"

Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

WORLD-FIRST: Ground-breaking research published today in the Ornithologist Journal has, for the first time, translated common UK bird vocalisations into equivalent phrases in the human language.

The results tell us a lot!

Sun glistening off some moisture (thought it was slug trail but felt too warm, the temperature not the moisture) on a dog lichen, in turn basking on a bed of mosses

Cheese puns. Belting
A Lithuanian equivalent to “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” is nemokamas sūris tik pelėkautuose. It means “the only free cheese is in a mousetrap”

* read on for more international cheese phrases (this thread may not turn out grate, but hopefully it will be gouda ‘nuff)…

I am FULL of gorms today. Unusually
Among the lost positives consigned to the dusty corners of the dictionary is ‘reck’, meaning ‘care’, ‘heed’, and ‘consideration’. Which means we can be reckful instead of reckless (and feckful, gormful, ruthful, ept, kempt, couth, consolate, and many more).
