While covering a protest on Jan. 31 I came face-to-face with an LAPD officer that I exposed two years ago, after they were caught on video sucker punching a Black man who was detained in Watts. @lataco.bsky.social

Give them some $$$ if you can

@lataco.bsky.social & @shoton35mm.bsky.social and the rest of the staff have been doing heroic work on a shoestring budget. Let’s see what we can do with actual resources
Today @lataco.bsky.social launched a fundraiser to help me start their investigative news desk. We're hoping to raise $25k to help pay for lab tests, analyze ICE data that the Daily Memo's been compiling + work with more freelancers. Been dreaming of this for years!

Honestly, journalism funders should have just handed them 10x this amount, but maybe it’s better to come from the community.

After a federal judge banned the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from using 40mm foam projectile launchers in crowd-control settings, the LAPD replaced the 40mm with another “less-lethal” launcher: the FN303.

Horrific account of what so-called "less lethal" munitions do to people's faces.

Don't forget: LAPD fired over 1000 rounds in a single day at mostly peaceful protesters.

Important coverage by @shoton35mm.bsky.social for @lataco.bsky.social.

WARNING: Graphic. Don't read while eating or near kids.

Days after covering a protest last week, I realized I had been shot with a new so-called "less-lethal" munition that the LAPD is using more commonly at protests: the FN303. This week, Chief McDonnell said that officers used the FN303 because a judge banned the LAPD from using 40mm launchers.

and that's my voice off to the side of the camera, having to (again) quote the penal code to LAPD. This keeps happening: getting threatened with arrest; officers claiming that they don't have to comply with the law for some reason. @shoton35mm.bsky.social and I were clearly displaying press badges.
1/31: Narrowly avoided being arrested when LAPD officers kettled a small group of protesters, legal observers, and press. I ID'd myself as a journalist & tried to leave but an officer claimed I wasn't exempt from dispersal orders & said I would be detained. Luckily another officer let me leave.
