The carbon market is not the way to do CO₂ removal (CDR). If we're serious about this, it has to be a government-led effort.
‘There is no money’: As carbon markets collapse, what happens to the forests they promised to protect?
After it was found most offsets did not represent real carbon reductions, the money dried up. But successful schemes such as Kasigau in Kenya now face a stark future

When any government receives negative information about their inflated base year emissions due to improved methodologies, they should correct their course and increase mitigation efforts instead of maintaining the reduction target in the revised NDC. Here is one example from Nigeria NDC.

"Here is the graph, which is so wild, the climate scientist had to call a colleague & check it"

It is true actually! In the Global Carbon Budget we do not usually show the LUC like this, because of interannual variability & uncertainty. But it is what the data says!

Global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions rise again in 2024, up 2.3%.

This is our collective progress, 10 years after the Paris Agreement.

Interesting climate/energy policy developments in China.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party lays out the key directions and priorities for China for the next five years. It reaffirms the importance of clean energy for China's energy, economic and industrial policy, but raises concerns about commitment to 2030 climate targets.

New paper with @glenpeters.bsky.social in Nature Communications today. We show how models and studies with a lot of scenarios in the IPCC scenarios database have a large impact on key findings, including emissions reductions, net-zero GHG year, and coal, gas, and oil consistent with 1.5°C.
Influence of individual models and studies on quantitative mitigation findings in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report - Nature Communications
The paper analyses the impact of the uneven representation of models and studies on key mitigation findings in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. It finds that the model with the most scenarios has a considerable influence on several findings.

It’s not just fossil fuels at risk of becoming stranded — without good policies, even decentralized renewables could be left behind. We have looked at this issue in this paper.
Sharing our new paper in #NatureCommunications on solar-based mini-grids interconnecting with national grids can boost reliability, cut costs + emissions, and reduce the risk of asset stranding, co-led by @benwinchester.bsky.social & with @shivmit.bsky.social, + others! @natureportfolio.nature.com

#LowCarbon #MiniGrid assets face risk of asset stranding, with the expansion of or improvement in reliability of national grids. Good #Policy to ensure these assets can interconnect can reduce this risk, + improve reliability, #emissions and costs! Read the paper here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I never thought I would be spending my time explaining the scientific method to one of the most well funded research institutions in the history of humanity, but here we are.

But it was so uplifting to see so many brilliant scientists provide context to every point in this thing. You guys rock.
Our comment on the DOE CWG report is done. It tips the scales at 439 pages, approx. 3x longer than the DOE report.
This is related to Brandolini's law: The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it.

Example: refuting one sentence.
