I’m a freedom-loving conservative. I left the Republican Party 5yrs ago. Today, I’m doing something I never thought I’d do - I’m formally joining the Democratic Party. Here’s why:👇 open.substack.com/pub/socialco...

Anti-abortion states are stepping up efforts to criminalize abortion -- and it could affect people's access to quality healthcare. @michelebgoodwin.bsky.social says those states' "hostile, toxic environment" is a "threat" to health and doctors' ability to provide care. #Velshi
'Hostile, toxic environment' in anti-abortion states is a threat to healthcare – and doctors
In post-Roe America under a second Trump administration, officials in anti-abortion states are escalating their efforts to criminalize abortion and punish those who provide it. In Indiana, an anti-abortion group has launched a legal fight for the public release of abortion records and vows to “ensure abortionists are held accountable.” Meanwhile, Louisiana is trying to extradite a New York doctor for prescribing and shipping abortion pills across state lines. “What we’ve had is this hostile, toxic environment in states where they have banned abortion, making it a threat to health,” Georgetown Law Professor Michele Goodwin tells Ali Velshi. “It’s not just a threat to health, it’s a threat to medical providers being able to provide medical care to patients.”

It is Black History Month and each day this month I am sharing stories from Canada's Black history.

Today it is the story of Chloe Cooley. She was an enslaved person whose story led to the first legislation in the British colonies to restrict the slave trade.

Two teenagers, a tiny library, and the nations’ largest publishers take on Idaho’s book ban law
Two Idaho teenagers, a handful of authors, a tiny public library, and the nation’s largest publishers are suing the state of Idaho, pushing back against HB170 – the state’s book ban that went into effect last summer - a law that restricts books from both public and school libraries. The law forbids minors from accessing books with content that the state has deemed “harmful to minors.” “The most important thing is to speak out,” says Jerrick, one of the student plaintiffs in the case. The plaintiffs say the law is overly broad because it enables any person in the community to complain about any book whose message they disagree with. “We are the boots on the ground here in Idaho,” says 17-year-old Jerrick.
