We can all agree we DON’T want engineers and doctors not learning their stuff and relying on biased computing instead, yeah? 😭
"Millions of students cant do their homework because ChatGPT is offline" is a horrifying headline to see because if we dont fix this shit ASAP we're going to have an entire fucking generation that has no actual educations.
Engineers and Doctors who have to pull up ChatGPT to do even the basic shit.

Defended both that heinous demon as well as t'other heinous demon who walks among humankind as "Andrew Tate". In a stroke.

It's not "Days since Trump showed his rotted heart" but minutes. Seconds. Y'all are gonna need a bigger chalkboard.

I truly feel like a freak for always finding the woods to be the most comforting of places, even at night. And yet I totally love folktales too. 🤷‍♂️
Readers, as you may know, I love Epping Forest, and have written a book about how woodlands have haunted our human imagination for as long as we have been able to think. Well, my pre-schooler is currently refusing to go into Epping Forest “because of creatures like the Gruffalo”...

MC is a reflexive liar who will withhold key facts about himself or even outright dissemble to protect his privacy. It's connected to his trauma and trust issues, but still. It's a gamble if people can forgive this--or trust him in return.

THIS. THIS right here is what GenAI sloppers can't ever have or revel in: the joy and memory and meaning attached to the creative process, which is partly what gives the creation itself worth to both creator and those seeing it later. ❤️
It was great to finally see a Hoopoe for the first time, I caught this one flicking up cockroaches to swallow!

This whole "15 is different from 8" thing is really shaking me up rn. Those people are ghouls who ease the path for abusers, full stop. A grown man on you at 15 is *terrifying*.

The thing I despise is inhumanity. It’s not really a political position, it’s an existential one. But if your political party manoeuvres itself into a place where it practises and promotes inhumanity, I will despise you.

If only. Too bad (as SF writers have grieved for years), techbros are techbros precisely because they lack the human and critical-thought chips that allow them 1. to interact with art normally and 2. care enough to even try. Instead they think slop is the same as creating (exhibit a).
What if the techbros viewed every Black Mirror episode as the warning they were meant to be instead of a marketing idea?

Honestly have no idea what some people get out of using AI for writing. Just had all the parts of a story idea click into place and it’s such a satisfying feeling. Why the hell would anyone want to outsource creativity?

NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

Tax the rich. Greg Ryan in @bloomberg.com:

A millionaire levy in Massachusetts that New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani holds up as a model for taxing the rich has generated $3 billion more in revenue than expected without forcing...

Looking back, for long form, I'd say 30% to 40%, so a significant amount.
How much of your writing occurs during the revision process? Before I started planning a few chapters ahead at a time, a lot. Now it’s a marginal amount #writingq #WritingCommunity

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

Publishing tends to feel very appeal-to-tradition, and I truly believe it's led to stagnation in what is available to readers, while also shutting out marginalized authors.

I am just one person. In private, a lot of my fellow authors are frustrated with the industry but are afraid to speak out. 2/

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 18181999:
"Write what you know" is limiting advice, which leads to limited writing. Instead, know what you're writing about. That means due diligence: good research, wide reading, specialist help and advice if you need it. Stay curious. Try new ideas. No limits.

Trad-pubbed my tenth? short story under another name, but also indie-pushed MYRIAD 1 and 2 out into the world under this nom de plume. My most personal work ever, being semi-autobiographical.

Just feel relieved. Reception barely matters.
People are doing year wrap-ups already (give December a chance, people!) buuuut I'm curious -- What's the thing that's most dear to you that you've published this year and why?
