If it's the book I started last night, I'm a dimension-hopping graduate student of magick at Cambridge.

If it's the last book I completed, I'm a private investigator of the natural with a little supernatural on the side, as a treat.

All good.

Finally back to writing something other than book and film reviews: I've been compiling this piece about risk & Gen Z from collected research for a few months. The super-observant @kyla.bsky.social shot first, but I'm posting anyway, tilted toward politics. www.collisiondetector.com/riskmaxxing-...
Riskmaxxing and the Death of the Middle Path
For older generations, risk is a choice. For Gen Z, it's a trap.

If It Bleeds
Stephen King
⭐⭐⭐

Last review of the year. I liked the Holly Gibney story (If It Bleeds) about another kind of Outsider, Life of Chuck was as expected, since I watched the movie on a flight a few months ago and Rat was ok. Good for winding down the end of the year in reading.

Nobody's Girl
Virginia Roberts Guiffre
😔😔😔

I did not enjoy reading this book and to be honest several times I had to put it down and walk away for a bit. It is worth your time despite the sadness it invokes, though be aware that she was abused from childhood and does not shy away from it.

Ok @bsky.app I scrolled through the #booksky feed for about 5 minutes one day last week, and now my Following feed is chock-a-block with #booksky tagged posts.

I don't have #booksky pinned, so... wtf? How do I cleanse my Following feed?

How far down did they have to dig to find, not one, but two women for this cover? Which one of whom is almost completely cropped out of the picture.

The Bewitching
Sylvia Moreno-Garcia
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Every Moreno-Garcia book becomes my new fave and The Bewitching is no different. Three stories intertwined from 1900s Mexico to a Massachusetts uni in the 1930s and 1990s at the same school. There are witches everywhere and they're up to no good.

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil
V.E. Schwab
⭐⭐⭐

Another YA-leaning vampire saga. I liked it, though it got very repetitive with the descriptions of blood sucking and victims dying. Would have been better with a better editor. There are two characters called Sabine, so that helped.

Martyr
Kaveh Akbar
⭐⭐

The story of Cyrus Shams just never clicked with me. Akbar writes in an intriguing voice but the beautiful prose just didn't help me connect. I'm pretty sure this is a me problem and maybe my state of mind at the time I was reading Martyr wasn't optimal.

Tried to set up a UPS shipment of a gift to my daughter in the US and filling out the "commercial invoice" to determine the tariff was both byzantine and enraging. The US government wants her to pay $40 in customs to receive it. (maybe more?) The current admin can fuçk all the way off.

Does this surprise anyone?
"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."
