This JWST's view of the Red Spider Nebula (NGC 6537) is spectacular!

It's about a planetary nebula i.e. the remnants of a Sun-like star shedding its outer layers, ionizing the ejected gas.

"A large planetary nebula. The nebula’s central star is hidden by a blotchy pinkish cloud of dust. A strong red light radiates from this area, illuminating the nearby dust. Two large loops extend diagonally away from the centre, formed of thin ridges of molecular gas, here coloured blue. They stretch out to the corners of the view. A huge number of bright, whitish stars cover the background, also easily visible through the thin dust layers."

We're celebrating the #NewYear with this stunning sight from the International Space Station: a giant blue jet and red sprites shooting upwards from a thunderstorm.

As she flew 400 km above Earth, NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers caught a gigantic spark with blue flashes and red tentacles shooting upwards. In the image, a blue jet propagates into space towards the upper layers of the atmosphere. The beam of light is followed by red flashes spreading like tentacles across the sky. The magnificent event lasted less than a second.

It's happening! ESA & JAXA are teaming up to visit Apophis, the 400-meter (1300-foot) asteroid that will skim close by Earth in April, 2029.

The RAMSES mission will study this potentially hazardous object & watch how Earth's gravity reshapes it as it passes. 🧪🔭

Not only monochrome rainbow, but also it is red! While Rayleigh scattering disperse all shorter wavelengths in a sunset scene, the rainbow from this light seemingly appears like in this photo.

Happy launch anniversary JWST!

The telescope launched on December 25, 2021 on an Ariane 5 rocket from the European Spaceport near Kourou, French Guiana.

Thanks to the hard work of the people at ESA, JWST had a fantastic start to its trip out to its parking spot 1.5 million km away at L2.

A close-in image of a protoplanetary disc around a newly formed star. Many different wavelengths of light are combined and represented by separate and various colours. A dark line across the centre is the disc, made of opaque dust: the star is hidden in here and creates a strong glow in the centre. A band going straight up is a jet, while other outflows form flares above and below the disc, and a tail coming off to one side.

For the final day, 24, of #ArtAdventCalendar, I present this illustration which I call Exploration of Amalthea. The latter is a very small moon of Jupiter in a very close orbit. Jupiter would fill half the sky seen from here!

Amalthea is a moon of Jupiter, the third closest to the planet at 181,365 km away (about 2.6 Jupiter radii from the centre of the planet). At just 250 km across at its widest point - its shape is not spherical - Amalthea is small, likely a captured asteroid. This image portrays a potential exploration party on the surface of Amalthea. From there, the globe of Jupiter spans an incredible 46 degrees of arc across the sky. The dark oval seen on the backdrop of Jupiter is the shadow cast by its moon Io.

Two spiral galaxies take the shape of a colorful beaded mask that sits above the nose and is angled from top left to bottom right. The galaxy at left, IC 2163, is smaller, taking up a little over a quarter of the view. The galaxy at right, NGC 2207, takes up half the view. IC 2163 has a bright white core, with two prominent white spiral arms that rotate counterclockwise and become straighter toward the ends. Its arms are dotted with pink. NGC 2207 has a very bright core that is larger. Overall, it appears to have thicker spiral arms that spin counterclockwise. This galaxy also contains more pink areas of star formation. In the middle, the galaxies’ arms appear to overlap. The black background of space shows extremely distant galaxies that are tiny, and often red and orange smudges, as well as a few blue foreground stars.
