Housing is a basic human right.

When people don’t have housing stability, their mental and physical health will suffer.

I’m currently facing a housing crisis and I had no idea the devastating impact it would have on my baseline.

We urgently need more affordable housing.

If the RBA lifts rates on Tuesday, you already know who’ll be screaming the loudest... the parties who spent years voting for tax cuts for the rich, blocking housing, and propping mega-profits.

I’ve put together a pre-emptive fact-check on the Libs and One Nation:

Five years have passed since Myanmar’s military staged a coup against the government.

Since February 1, 2021, the junta has decimated almost every facet of life in Myanmar.

The junta’s impunity needs to end.

Art is political. In the 1700s in Japan, Karai Haciemon (1718-90) invented senryu to poke fun at politicians and make social statements. Post some of your senryu below and I will choose one or two to share in our mid- February issue.

I missed celebrating Tues's North American debut of Emi Yagi's When the Museum Is Closed (trans Yuki Tejima).

The novel... "fully commits to a reality that is only transitory. Statues speak... Rika and a marble statue have on-page sex, in open defiance of the rule, 'Please do not touch the art.'”

Sayaka Murata's 2016 Akutagawa winner, Convenience Store Woman, led the recent boom in translated Japanese fiction. Her stories dissect how society's expectations don't stand up to scrutiny. Her protagonists seem oddball, but she claims anxieties about "not being human enough" are "very normal".

The regime is arresting journalists.

Journalism is necessary to any functioning democracy.

Four journalists have been arrested for documenting atrocities:

Don Lemon

Trahern Jeen Crews

Georgia Fort

Lydell Lundy

We can’t accept this.

They want to silence us. All of us.

Let’s not forget that ICE Director Todd Lyons said he wanted to run deportations like “Amazon Prime for human beings”.

People are not packages.

They have rights.

They deserve basic human decency.

This is a significant escalation.

Love to go through footnotes from research I did a year ago and note that fully half of the .gov urls are 404s and often I can't find the material archived elsewhere (other than my own .pdf). The wipeout of knowledge courtesy of the Trump admin is going to reverberate for decades.

I hate this. I hate that scholars and teachers are supposed to be digital fraud experts. I hate that this part of their job description is becoming larger and larger. I hate the widening distrust. I hate a culture that aggressively devalues the curiosity and humility required for ongoing learning.
New trick discovered today: an LLM-generated essay, saved as a PDF, with a tiny white space between each letter. This makes it impossible to paste quotes into a search engine, prevents text-matching in plagiarism checkers, & means URLs in bibliographies can't be clicked on. A lot of my time wasted.
