@nytimes.com is doubly wrong. First, it's wrong that Google searches and private AI chats are unprotected under the 4th Amendment. Second, it's wrong that we should protect AI queries based on a therapist-style privilege. 1/

There's a book to be written on the places these companies choose. Meta and Amazon are not investing tens of billions in North Louisiana because they respect the local population. Quite the opposite. And they prefer that there's no critical local journalism or anyone to write that book.
Microsoft and Google say data centers will create thousands of jobs in Chile, but an analysis of permit filings by @restofworld.org shows only a small number of potential positions — and most are not skilled IT jobs, but those in security and cleaning. restofworld.org/2025/data-ce...

To be clear, the big strategy they're pursuing here is to wait for the GOP to break its worthless promise yet again and then go to the electorate and say "We trusted them and gave them what they wanted, and they lied!" which is definitely a thing voters like and respect.
Shaheen: "We've heard from a number of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle that they're willing to come to the table, they're willing to work with us once the govt is open to get this done. We've heard the same thing from the White House. So now we'll see if they're really gonna work w/us"

Pretty much all affordability discourse could benefit from just posting this chart.
If you're in the better off America, all the luxury goods you want in excess are for the most part much cheaper. If you're in the poorer America, most of the shit you need to live/grow is more expensive.

Whoa -- Sen. Durbin went to up Leader Thune during the vote last night to tell him that on the shutdown vote and ACA promise that "8 of us are sticking our neck out that you're going to keep your word. I hope you will. He said 'I assure you I will,'" Durbin says just now

And it’s all built on what seems to be malicious and vast intellectual property theft.

This is the part of the deal I'm most upset about -- that and the "campus climate" survey on anti-semitism, which was always rich, but is frankly disgusting now given that the right is platforming full blown Holocaust deniers.
There are bad things here, including the transparently bad-faith mess about reporting students races + SAT/ACT scores to the government so they can falsely accuse Cornell in the future of illegal race-based affirmative action (a move that imperils perfectly legal class-based affirmative action).

extremely disappointing result from Cornell...
Cornell agreed to pay $30m, hand over admissions data with demographic breakdowns, produce annual "campus climate" surveys to check on antisemitism and changes "since October of 2023," and—here's the dumbest part they agreed to—that the govt can open new investigations whenever it wants.
Appeasers.
