I feel like I'm losing my mind. Since the beginning of Trump's first term, Dems have way over-performed in special elections, off-year elections, even midterms. (Remember 2022?)

Dem gains in this week's elections erased the inroads Trump made with non-white, young, and low-income voters in 2024. In fact, the R-to-D shift from 24 to 25 is double Trump's gains from 20-24. Claims of a GOP political realignment have been highly exaggerated

i mean idk I have been organizing things of all kinds for more than a decade (including things i definitely didn't want the cops to learn about) and i think Cooper is exactly right?

this is exactly right. and it's why outsourcing all political judgement to polls was an enormous mistake.
The budget fight shows the limits of popularism. Yes, "we're not doing a deal without lowering health care costs" probably polls best among people who hear it but "we're not doing a deal because we can't trust these fucking guys" is easier to get in front of people who don't follow the news

I think it's actually.....all of these? Elites believe that 1) if they cross trump there will be very real immediate consequences (their projects defunded, armed men might come to their house, etc) 2) resisting Trump goes against the popular will 3) eventually all of this will just blow over
It’s not that. Liberal elites aren’t being held in check by the fear of punishment but because they exist in neurotic, insecure social circles where being insufficiently in touch with “real Americans” is worse than being insufficient opposed to fascism. Our elites don’t sincerely fear punishment.
I disagree with the good doctor’s dx here: I think this is perfectly consistent with a proto-authoritarian state that has very limited but nonzero capacity to punish dissidents.
