The ONLY time I have been able to write a negative review and not get death threats is for Code Violet and that's because literally no one even knew it existed to care about. But I had reflux for the entire time I was writing my review because of how even gentle criticisms are usually received.
I'm seeing a lot of people today claim that negative criticism of games is overvalued or overrepresented and that's...just not true? The incentives are very clearly on the side of positivity, whereas giving a game a bad review is almost guaranteed to get you at least some hate mail

a lot of this is culture and politics of the moment, but also: we turned every single multiplayer game into an esports-aligned hyper-competitive service game where performance is tied to paid progression tracks and then wonder why everyone in the audience is a jackass.
and like yeah the marketing has been mismanaged, is fun to riff on, who up wresting their shieldbreaker from enemy wardens etc. but thats not the vibe on youtube. the vibe is really dark. at some point you gotta say what on earth is "good" marketing when this is the audience you have to sell to
