This narrative is not new. Mecha as a genre is in vogue, now, more than it used to be, and it's especially popular with queer and trans game developers, myself among them. It's unsurprising. Mecha anime is inherently defined by the relationship between the self and the body, be it flesh or metal. Trans and queer bodies are institutionally and societally contested, so it's a genre that lends itself well to the exploration of that struggle. However, there remains a fact that can make it difficult for me to consume mecha content made by my white queer contemporaries: mecha is inseparable from war. It's impossible to properly engage with the genre without understanding this and being willing to accept your role in it.

Incredible opening sentence for a paragraph in an academic text
Gambling got short shrift from Margaret Thatcher, who was, by disposition and upbringing, suspicious of merriment. As she told one interviewer, ‘For us, it was rather a sin to enjoy yourself by entertainment. Life was not to enjoy ourselves. Life was to work and do things’ (Filby 2013). The National Lottery was ushered in by John Major, who describes his role in the process in an article entitled, apparently without irony, ‘How I gave hope to the poor’ (Major 1999). He recalls that when he told the cabinet of his plan to include it in the 1992 manifesto, he was greeted by ‘a roomful of raised eyebrows and doubtful faces’. Major placed opposition to his plan into two camps: the first included Liverpool MPs anxious about the fortunes of the football pools and bishops and Conservatives concerned about the morality of state-sanctioned gambling. To Major, these objections were valid. But what made him ‘more determined than ever’ to proceed with a national lottery was the ‘paternalist nonsense’ coming from ‘Labour and Liberal benches as well as from Tories’: ‘In short, they thought the poor needed protection from themselves … People don’t have to buy Lottery tickets. But I see no good reason why they shouldn’t be given the opportunity to do so’ (Major 1999).5

Many of my feelings regarding this series can be summed up in this excerpt from a Vajra Chandrasekera interview
MGW: That very much makes me think of—there’s been a conversation recently around how these tech people, the tech industry, and billionaires have been inspired by science fiction, and that has given science fiction authors some pause. VC: This is something I have been yelling about for a long time on social media. Every time I say it, someone gets mad at me, like I’m denigrating science fiction or whatever. But as a science fiction author, I’m allowed to say it! A lot of this is science fiction’s fault, and I think we should clearly acknowledge that. Because—you know the Torment Nexus meme? I love it, I enjoy it, but it also elides culpability in a way. It’s like, “oh, we were just warning you against it, we didn’t mean to make it sound cool.” You kind of did, a little bit, mean to make it sound cool. As of today, there’s this thing where people are reading and watching Starship Troopers again, and finding it aspirational. So people don’t necessarily take out of the books what we put in them. Especially if there haven’t been a great deal of thought about the consequences of a technology, or a social or technological turn, it’s very easy for it to become toxic inside the brain of someone like Elon Musk. I think he’s a big fan of Iain Banks, which is absurd to me because Banks had this very leftist writing. But you can’t control how you are read.
