New, from me: Defenders of police abuses will sometimes talk about “bad apples” spoiling the barrel.

This is the wrong metaphor for ICE and CBP. The barrel itself is rotten. 🧵

Wow, what average mom and pop? Do you know that by 10 or 12 homes for retirement? Complete disconnect from reality. While it seems pretty commonplace in the Trump administration, I hope it will keep surprising me every time I see it in the wild.
Bessent: "Someone, maybe your parents for their retirement have bought 5, 10, 12 homes."

I guarantee you that that "Be calm. Don't panic. Have an open mind." is straight from the Trump pussy grabbing lexicon. This is classic abuser language. "If you just relax and enjoy it, it could be good for both of us."

Not pushing back now. Makes everyone a co-conspirator or a victim.
BARTIROMO: What do you want to say about the European Union pushing back and saying they're not going to complete their trade deal with the US because of Greenland?

BESSENT: I'd tell everyone sit back. Take a deep breath. Do not retaliate. Do not retaliate. Have an open mind.

It's too bad that Schumer or Jeffries can't find the courage to stand in front of a microphone and be this unequivocal about it. The leaders of the Democratic party need to stand up with a single voice and say what must be said.
Trump is a megalomaniacal, criminal madman, he is the singular force that is destroying the entire world order and the whole American system, and rather than acknowledging him as a crisis, our institutions are still, STILL determined to relentlessly normalize him

Well, they're using AI, problem solved. I asked ChatGPT a question about plants in my garden and it suggested that a noxious invasive species would be good in my yard. When I pointed this out, it explained that it had forgotten where I live even though I started the conversation with my area code...
Sean Duffy on lessons learned from the DCA crash: "The problem, the last administration, there was almost 40 near misses in the couple years before this crash and they didn't do anything about it."

just got out of an uber. the driver was telling me how he has to work 16 hour days, seven days a week, at two different jobs to afford rent. he doesn't have healthcare and he worries about retirement. "i would feel a lot better if we owned greenland," he told me. then he cried.

Jamelle and I disagree on some things. (We've met. He's a very nice guy.) But this is Real Talk that irrational doomers need to hear and I'm sitting here applauding his willingness to take the wave of kookery that's gonna come his way for saying all this.
okay the actual last thing i have to say here is that a lot of you are responding with "you think guardrails and institutions will hold!" and that is a sign you aren't actually engaging with the words you're reading. (cont.)

Pick your historical event: the French Revolution, the American Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, etc etc. None of them will ever happen again in exactly the same way and context. But that doesn’t mean we can’t find meaningful echoes of them in current events.

Ice isn't the problem. It goes higher. Homeland Security is an organization that should have never existed. The Patriot act should have never been passed. If you reimagine America without it, it probably doesn't look anything like the one we're living in right now. 1/2

The message from the White House this morning is that, once again, it falls on ordinary American citizens to remain calm and professional when dealing with the heavily armed agents of the government because they are very emotional and might fly off into a murderous rage at the slightest insult.

It seems that the best way to keep the press from talking about Epstein is to have ICE kill American citizens. This will happen again because we perform to what we measure.

Better yet, disestablish all of DHS, and undo the nightmarish idiocies that we created in a panic 25 years ago. Reestablish the INS, get rid of ODNI, fix the damage from the Patriot Act, etc.
For the love of all that is decent and holy: abolish ICE

Good, direct, unequivocal messaging here.

Also: to Trumpists, lying is a patriotic sacrament. Trumpists lie because they believe, as a tenet of Trumpism, that the people they hate deserve to be lied to and that it’s for the best for the few people they don’t hate today.
ICE shot and killed a woman on camera today. We all saw the video.

The Trump administration is lying.

Without exaggeration this is a huge part of how we surrendered the country to the worst humans of all time - the left-of-center’s conviction that you can’t be disrespectful to stupid people to has robbed us of the social censure that forces stupid people to stop being stupid
my plan to get this country back on track consists of one bullet point: i propose we stop pretending stupid people arent stupid just because theyre loud and theres a lot of them

There are stupid people on all sides and empowering one group of idiots just emboldens every other. Americans need to learn to feel shame again but more importantly the 80% who are not stupid need to feel empowered to openly show disgust and disapproval when confronted with stupid.

There are 3 types of Trump supporter.
A. The incurably stupid
B. Those with a financial interest.
C. Those who wish to impose their cultural views on everyone.
