Field demo from rapidly changing northern ecosystems. This shows a violent stream of methane bubbles venting through thawing permafrost soils to the sky. Video credit to Tom Douglas and Torre Jorgenson. Curious bog dog is a Friday bonus.

New paper on what drives organic aerosol in NY - anthropogenic chemicals have emerged as 2x traffic sources, while wildfire smoke is persistent and substantial - and we see evidence that it enhances biogenic SOA.

On Friday, June 20 we lost contact with our methane-measuring satellite. Despite considerable efforts we were unable to reestablish contact. This morning we learned that the satellite has lost power, and it is anticipated to be unrecoverable.

The Five Boro Bike Tour is an awesome 40 mile ride through NYC. I highly recommend it. This year I did a slightly modified version so I could stop at 44 miles. But it meant I got to see the NYPD escort the lead pack of 32,000 bicycles out of Central Park in style!

And PLEASE do not use your gas stove or oven if you rely on a window for ventilation of the exhaust (ie. most apartments in NYC).
New Yorkers: close your windows, run your air purifiers, and wear your N95 mask on the street. It's going to be smoky today.

Huge wildfire burning in the Hamptons.

Many of the trees in this area have died from pine-beetle infestation, & the whole tip of LI is "abnormally dry" after a year of on-and-off drought.

And this is one of the richest parts of the country.

Yes, #ClimateChange IS going to hurt the affluent too.

Adding to what Dan and others have said: Measuring air quality at diplomatic posts in places like Beijing, Delhi, and Lahore, using EPA standard technology, and openly sharing it with the public, has been a force pushing along progress toward better air quality in all those locations.
Big (bad) news: the US Embassy air monitoring program webpage has been taken down: www.airnow.gov/internationa...

This erases ~17 years of a critical data source at ~80 US diplomatic posts around the world. Critically for the health of thousands of foreign services officers, critical for research..
