Reporting on why this hasn’t happened yet given the wild pace of deregulation elsewhere would probably be really illuminating. Some of these regs are longtime and relatively uncontroversial wishlist items for the gun lobby and Trump hasn’t delivered.

The potential for upheaval is precisely why economic elites wield AI as a weapon to threaten workers, even as we've seen time and again that AI cannot actually replace what humans do.

You can take these dynamics seriously without buying into the framing of the people doing the threatening.
I'm not even saying that's the most *likely* possibility, but it's just very clear that the likelihood of that outcome as increased and even if there's, like, a 1 in 10 change that "AI replaces most to all white collar jobs in 10 years" that's an *enormous* risk to the social order!

I just don’t know about assigning importance to a potential unlikely crisis. Engaging seriously with these hypotheticals on the basis of industry hype just reinforces the hype so bosses can lay people off to avoid being “left behind.” This has happened like half a dozen times in the last few years.

Ok, but what evidence would cause me to view that as remotely possible. Aside from the hype, I mean. There are actual problems that exist right now and some of them are being made worse by credulity around a technology that pretty plainly cannot work.

Researchers at the company have determined that the product the company makes is really good. And incredible. They say it’s like a god or a spirit.
Researchers working with the A.I. system Claude have come to understand that the model’s selfhood, like our own, is a matter of both neurons and narratives. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/kEX1vV
