Neglected in present-day discussions of tonnage, and ratios, is the effect the treaty had on base development and fortifications in the Pacific.
On this day in 1922, the Washington Naval Treaty is signed by representatives of Great Britain, the United States, Japan, France and Italy. The treaty limited numbers of warships by establishing tonnage limits for each nation, and included a "building holiday" for battleships.
