1/ 📢 @cosmik.network has been awarded $1M in grant funding by Open Philanthropy and @asterainstitute.bsky.social These generous grants will support our development of Semble - a social "micro-knowledge" network for researchers on Bluesky/ATProto. Think Are.na + Goodreads for research!
What a wonderful essay! Such timely questions around how we make social media into more than “just” social media, but also into information ecosystems that help us think better, together. Adding a few thoughts that came up while reading 🧵
Happy holidays, Bluesky! I got you a megathrust earthquake, soil liquefaction, spine-tingling papers about the way our networks confound knowledge, and a PDF in a pear tree. It's my wrap on a year of trying to make sense of how we make sense of what's happening to us.

Researchers: Aside from moderation and safety features, what would you want in a researcher-focused social app? Obviously a feed of shared papers, but what else?
We could make our own bsky client that does this by default? Maybe?

after a fun chat with @laurenshof.online and @ronentk.me I finally made time to write up some more thoughts about interoperability in the atmosphere without needing to share lexicons!

Two Types of Interoperability Without Sharing Lexicons - Wesley's notes
Sharing lexicons is not the only way to leverage atproto’s interoperability

Newbie @graze.social question - how crazy is it to try and set up a feed where new messages get piped into a Discord channel? I imagine for highly active feeds this wouldn't make sense, but maybe for quieter ones it's possible?

These are really important concerns to address! The science community can play a pivotal role here in protocol governance, standards, sustainable infra hosting, etc
Primary concern is governance of the protocol in a company. Even though I note they plan to give up control, in practice the biggest player likely to dominate standards discussions. Secondary concern is abandonment if Bsky company fails. But I do think the experiment is interesting and worth trying!

What if we used semble.so to collect bsky posts to feed into pol.is discussions? Often there are lots of great opinions being shared on bsky around a certain topic (for example atproto auth), but we lack ways to meaningfully aggregate them. pol.is is great for mapping convos, but isn't where ppl are
I went ahead and created a pol.is conversation about this, pls contribute! pol.is/7bdiwbvh2d

Got a project, code, app, movement, tech, community or anything else that you’d like to present at #ATmosphereConf?

Get your submissions in - we’d love to hear from you and will have lots of opportunities to share your work, even if it’s a lightning talk.
We're at nearly 50 submissions! If you've been debating on a proposal then this is your sign. Especially interested in proposals on private data, moderation/trust/safety, or fighting disinformation to fill some interest gap. #ATProtocol #ATmosphereConf

When I was in Berlin I spoke about how 3 sectors - news, science & government - can best use Bluesky and #atproto.

But the feedback was almost exclusively about #ATscience. And so...

We can just do things ->
We can just do things *that other platforms can't*
Yes. The route is not *just* the moral argument of ATProto, it is actually to take *what the ideology and morals of ATProto allows us to build that others cannot or will not*.

Much of SF lost power last night. Waymos blocked intersections across the city, even though they are Wayless than 1% of cars on the roads. They accumulated at their failure points--intersections with no green lights, in busy areas, and shut down traffic there.

Feel like this deserves more attention. Big tech, with its centralized control of markets and information, is actually similar to the centralized socialist planner that Hayek rejected so vehemently?

It would be awesome to use a collective deliberation tool like polis for making sense of atproto ecosystem-wide discussions like sign in branding / terminology. Bsky threads are not the appropriate format. plus many more voice can contribute meaningfully.

I'm really surprised he didn't mention the Enclosure Movement: this process of privatizing public goods goes WAY back to the the Middle Ages, when nobles took land that had been community property for centuries--land on which everyone relied to avoid starvation--& seized it as private property.
