I have a book reading at 7 pm on Wednesday of next week (July 30) for my biography of Kid Cann.

It's at Magers & Quinn.

Registration required, but it is free.
There will be chocolate, and it is free, too!

Oh my Lord, no.

I would end up on a watchlist.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

I'm in my mid-30s, finally reading Moby Dick for the first time after avoiding it for years because I heard from everyone, everywhere that it is boring.

I LOVE it. Even the cetology digressions. ESPECIALLY the cetology digressions.
The Moby Dick feed on here makes me feel like I would really enjoy Moby Dick.

I've been thinking about volunteering with LibriVox to record audiobooks.

But my kid just told me that I sound like Yoshi, so, maybe not a great fit for reading the classics out loud?

Reason #384 Why I don't want the light rail crawling with security:

One time when I was on the green line, an elderly woman a few feet away from me dozed off in her seat. A security guard came up to her and touched her, waking her up.

An old lady can't nap on the train?

Yes, she was Black.

Metro Transit to increase security presence on light rail as holidays begin
In a press release, officials say crime is down 21% systemwide, while officer-initiated calls for service are up 129% from last year.

It's true, I haven't done drugs in the Midwest. But I'm pretty sure that I got a few contact highs as a teenager in Cleveland.
Most of you haven’t done drugs in Iowa. Midwest for that matter. It shows if we’re being honest.

I've been away from social media for a few days, because of a death in the family. He lived a long, upright, and fulfilling life. He had many friends and a loving partner. He was my dad's favorite uncle, and the last of his generation.

They say that they're covering their faces so that they don't get doxxed, but actually it's because they know they're committing human rights violations, and that they could be tried & convicted by a future tribunal.

I learned this from reading about late-20th century fascist governments.
Border Patrol rammed US citizen's car after she was warning the neighborhood’s residents about the presence of federal immigrant agents.
Then Border Patrol Agent bragged in texts about shooting her. newrepublic.com/post/202824/... @newrepublic.com

Congratulations, Becka.
Becka Thompson wins the Great Value Award for the council candidate with fewest dollars spent per vote received - $4.21. She still lost big to Aurin Chowdhury ($6.47).

Shelley Madore ($62.31) outdid Lydia Millard ($42.59) for biggest spender per vote. Both of them lost big.

I accidentally clicked the link, so I figured I might as well read it, and I could only make it about 1/5th of the way through it. Now I feel like I need a bath.

It is bad. These two guests are bad people. Douthat is a bad person, too, but we knew that already.

When the reckoning finally comes, I dearly wish that the press will be held accountable for its enthusiastic production of fascist propaganda.
Close in the heels of this. Was only subscribed to the games section but i cancelled what I could.

A mansion murder mystery / romance set in rural Minnesota. 😍

Book release is in June 2026. DAE have recommendations of books like this that I can read in the meantime? It's like the confluence of all my favorite tropes.

Looking on the bright side in the mayoral election results:

Troy A. Peterson, lynching advocate, received fewer votes than "WRITE-IN." Only half as many, in fact.

IDK if Older Kid is feeling contrarian today, or just trolling (both are equally possible with her), but she argued vehemently first that November is 28 days long, and second that a graphic novel she wrote about sentient bath toys is nonfiction.

I am delighted that this is the photo she went with. Surely, there is nothing that children trust more than hunched-over sullenness.
This was in our mailbox and does not have postage. I could raise a stink or let it be, since she's going to get pasted by @aurinmpls.bsky.social tomorrow anyway.

Book talk for November 3. What’s everyone reading?
When I started as a public librarian, I checked out a few annual “Best of” anthologies to get a sense for different genres: sports writing, science writing, crime fiction, short stories in general.

I didn't find it hard to get through House of Leaves. It was very entertaining.

I took about six months to finish Ulysses, though. (My dad read it in 36 hours without sleeping or eating, what does that say about him? 😆)
Hell with your zodiac sign, how many times did you try to get through House of Leaves

Day 7 of my immune system mistaking a flu shot for a real infection and fighting it tooth and nail. I've gotten the flu vaccine every year religiously for more than 2 decades and it has NEVER been this bad. 😩

My kid: I want to learn to juggle.
My husband: That'll be fun! You can start with tennis balls.
My kid: No, I want to start with eggs.

My husband brought home a new brand of soda sweetened with Stevia. I liked it.

I started getting awful headaches and falling asleep during the day.

Turns out, Stevia lowers your blood pressure.

I have hypotension. It's not great.

So. I won't be buying anything else that's Stevia-sweetened. 😜
STOP PUTTING STEVIA IN EVERYTHING!

Not at all frustrating that my brain happily and easily took me through the first 70k words of this novel manuscript and then developed writer's block.

Overflowing with ideas until the home stretch. 😭

Older Kid is demanding a baby sister. We told her that, even if we were to have another kid, we cannot guarantee the gender. She finds this surprising and confusing.

Older kid told her brother that if he doesn't start behaving himself, she's going to sell him to a pet store. This is probably the harshest thing she has ever said to him, and Little Guy thinks it's HILARIOUS.

No peanut butter, how about this?

Filling out my ballot right now and I remembered seeing Heather's post so I searched for it.

Thank you to the mysterious mailing list for telling us which candidates are apolitical cowards! Very helpful. 🥳
New "apolitical" park board slate just dropped (into my email from a mysterious mailing list I definitely didn't opt-in to). 🙃

Last night before dinner, I gave Younger Kid his usual gummy multivitamin, and he screeched angrily and threw it on the floor.
His sister picked it up, and held it in front of his mouth. He uncomplainingly ate it out of her hand.

"Awww, he's so cute," said sister. 💓
