This is an immensely gripping book, reminding us of what we miss when we marginalise the opening 3 months of #WW1 & resolve the Western Front peremptorily into the stasis of trench warfare. Here is mobility, strategy, courage, decision—& some of the worst casualties of the war

The only work of #BookerPrize winner David Szalay I’d heard was the excellent BBCRadio4 short story series, ‘Turbulence’. Although it’s not the 1st novel to assert the recalcitrant primacy of the body, ‘Flesh’ triumphs in its unsparing portrayal of a man perhaps immune to the inner life

If you don’t like the BBC, I suggest that you go to America and watch their TV for a day. It gives you a migraine. The BBC also keeps the standards of the other outlets relatively high. If you think we watch shit now, imagine it with no BBC. And they actually care about drama, children’s, factual.

Whatever the local causes on this occasion, the BBC is in essence the victim of a destructively fissiparous society slowly fragmenting into mutually hostile & resentful moieties—each believing the others exercise stealth control over the institutions of a shrinking civil society

Plenty of extraordinarily good stuff from the BBC. Every. Single. Day. And for pennies. Eg.

Wide-ranging review finds no convincing connection after Trump said women should ‘fight like hell’ to avoid painkiller
A wide-ranging review into paracetamol use by pregnant women has found no convincing link between the common painkiller and the chances of children being diagnosed with autism and ADHD.
Publication of the work was fast-tracked to provide prospective mothers and their doctors with reliable information after the Trump administration urged pregnant women to avoid paracetamol – also known as acetaminophen or Tylenol – claiming it was contributing to rising rates of autism. Shocked at watching MOTD2. The coverage of the Brentford v Newcastle match was clearly edited, and gave the impression that Brentford won 3-1. Typical BBC bias.

We are so far through the looking glass that the man who tried to overthrow an election becomes president, the people who attacked the Capitol are turned into martyrs, & it's the BBC that gets punished - cheered on by the worst news outlets in the UK & the two most dishonest politicians of our age.
It’s not at all clear to me how the BBC can do any kind of serious journalism if its top two bosses can be forced to quit over such an obviously confected scandal. There is no substantive error here. How can the BBC report on Trump, or Farage, or anyone else, in these circumstances?

A national newspaper journalist went on a British TV channel to claim police stats showed asylum-seekers committed 44% of sex crimes in Dorset.
This shocking claim was treated as fact by the channel which promoted the clip on social media where it was amplified by AI.
Except... it's bollocks.

The absolute state of Allison Pearson & GBeebies.
A malevolent, malignant and profoundly unfunny joke of a media outlet.
In a normal country under normal circumstances, the national regulator would throw the book at a TV station that put out such hate-mongering disinformation.
But here we are.

Just absolutely classic BBC. You've just broadcast the most successful programme of the year, uniting Gen Z kids online and Boomers on broadcast in a return to appointment television. And instead of celebrating, your DG reigns due to a made-up right-wing scandal.

I had my disagreements with the BBC under Tim Davie but he was a decent man doing a difficult job.
To see Trump's White House claiming credit for his downfall and attacking the BBC should worry us all.

Likewise the new head of BBC News. The outgoing one did terrible damage to its credibility and it is hilariously ironic that she is leaving because of alleged left-wing bias
More than any time since the 1980s, perhaps ever, the BBC needs a journalistic warrior to lead it. Someone who can see the shape of a fight coming and work out how to win it and have the will to do so. Davie was never that guy. It can't be a hack from the queue. Maybe it should be a refugee from CBS
