🚨New publication alert!

We just published a brief on what happens to parenting students' chances of success in college when they are threatened with eviction. The results are devastating. I have never cried when writing up research before. I did this time.

Ousted from Opportunity: Eviction's Adverse Impact on Parenting College Students
New America partnered with the Eviction Lab to understand how eviction affects parents who are attending college while caring for children—and found it likely leads to severe negative consequences.

To stop drug boats, GOP lawmakers want to license privateers
A bill introduced Thursday looks to revive a presidential power from the age of sail, by which Trump could issue letters of marque authorizing private raids at sea.

There is something to be said about having rolled up your sleeves, and earning the right to be highly critical of institutions you want to see realizing their highest potential.
One consistent theme of the anti-institutionalists is that they have not run the institutions they despise. The is akin to Rufo overseeing the implosion of New College, despite both institutions been handed massive financial resources.
CBS News staffers might want to check into how things are going at their boss’s anti-woke “university” in Austin.

The split screen between Australia and the USA this week makes me weep.

Nothing will change here, while laws will likely be strengthened in a country that already had strict gun control.

Australia already has some of the world's toughest gun laws, but the Bondi mass shooting could lead to even tougher rules as the realization spreads that they aren't strong enough to prevent bloodshed. https://cnn.it/4pdQBDP

Guess my family won't be coming to visit any time soon.

Tourism revenue is down about $12 billion this year, nice to see the administration trying to get tourism dollar as close to zero as possible.
It's not just social media. Looks like visitors to the US from Europe and other countries that are part of the visa waiver program will have to submit an enormous amount of data about themselves and their families, including DNA, if proposed new rules are accepted

Oh yes, when I needed physical therapy earlier this year I could shop among the seven PT locations within ten miles.

All run by the Inova health system. Choices abound!

The idea that any can “shop” for healthcare, like it’s the same as new pair of shoes, continues to be a moronic idea.
Roger Marshall: "We want patients to become consumers again. We want patients to see what the actual prices are. We believe that if we would add the price tags to this bill, that it would save the country a trillion dollars a year."

For new high school graduates, starting off with an associate or bachelors degree program is probably a better path to long-term career success and economic security.

That is the takeaway from my new boss' piece on workforce pell programs.
Read and share.

Regulations Must Get Workforce Pell Right (opinion)
Many young people will be better served by going straight to degree programs—not using up their Pell eligibility on short-term programs. The regulations should account for this.

I cannot imagine how devastated I would have been if I had gotten to that day and been turned away.

Abhorrent to do this.
If you've ever been to a naturalization ceremony, you know they're filled with people whose palpable love of this country is twenty times stronger than the pinched "patriotism" of any native-born MAGA chud.

Just unspeakable assholery.

Me & my friends had thoughts!!

Kicker: "Baker grew up in VA & lived in the South most of her life. She finds it astounding that anyone would think of a public university in the South as apolitical. 'No one who lives in the South,' she says, 'believes that Southern universities are not political.'"
This is a thoughtful and well-researched piece (featuring quite a few higher ed faculty members, including me) on the growth of most SEC universities. The reasons behind this growth are complex.

This is the point. If the Dems gained 17 points here then any district that had a margin of 17 points or less is vulnerable and the GOP knows it and they are freaking out.
That sound you hear? It’s incumbent republicans suddenly going quiet on redistricting if a Trump +22 district becomes a +5 district.
