It’s a long day of merriment here but I woke up early and read @lilyking.bsky.social’s Heart the Lover in nearly one sitting and am hungover with grief and also struck by how good this novel is. Read it when your heart is strong — or when you need fortifying.

There are too many things to hate about the internet but I have a big one.

Online shopping now means family (primarily grandparents) send gifts directly to us and suddenly it’s my job to wrap EVERY PRESENT UNDER THE TREE WHEN I HAVE NO TIME OR ENERGY.

New from me: In the New Republic @newrepublic.com, I wrote that we should refuse to choose between the easy way and the hard way to boost birth rates.
What If Both Sides in the Birth Rate Debate Are Wrong?
The right wants to steer women away from work and toward motherhood. The left wants to provide them with more state support so it’s easier to have children. We should refuse this choice.

I'm back with an update. We've got ourselves a Democratic mayor in Pocatello, Idaho -- and by a landslide!
Guys. The Democrat got the highest votes in Pocatello’s mayoral race last night. We are looking at a runoff in December since no one hit 50% (five candidates ran) but that’s never happened in our almost-12 years here.

It's literally painful at this point to see winter weather happening everywhere but here. As my daughter said the other day: "What do we want? Snow! When do we want it? Now!"

Veggie burger and fries on Friday nights: 11yo eats only spicy black bean patty with fries; 5yo eats only Bluey sandwich (cheddar cheese with jam on pitas) and fruit, as she refuses all potato products. Cross contamination results in rage.
What’s it like to have kids? Breakfast for dinner and 11yo eats only hashbrowns and fried eggs, hates veggie sausage; 5yo eats only veggie sausage and scrambled eggs, hates hashbrowns. Cross contamination results in rage.

This article is absolutely devastating.
NEW:

In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

Walker is one of several women ProPublica found with underlying health conditions who died when they couldn’t access abortions.

Just a few days ago Ride Wit Me came out of my memory like smoke and I listened to all the Nelly I could. The songs have still got it, my sixth grader agreed.
My personal favorites are Country Grammar Shake Ya Tailfeather and Ride Wit Me but when I hear the opening bars of Hot in Herre it activates a tiny part of my brain that instantly transports me to off campus basement parties circa 2003 and that’s real power

Yesterday a small winter bird was on our front porch, injured. We didn’t know what to do but sheltered it in case a cat passed by, brought it water, and let it rest. It eventually flew away and what if we were all of us met with shelter, respite, water, and a caring eye?

In this @latimes.com op-ed, @leahegose.bsky.social draws on her research and volunteer work to show how the SNAP benefits cutoff is worsening hunger. She writes that the Trump administration could fund SNAP during the shutdown but has not, and shares ways readers can help locally. ⤵️
Sharing an op-ed I penned about the importance of SNAP--not just for the program's beneficiaries, but for all us. In the meantime, we're putting a lot of pressure on local food pantries--and they will certainly need our support. (TLDR: give money to your local orgs)

Fantastic op-ed from an excellent sociologist, Leah Gose, on the critical importance of SNAP and the challenge food pantries face in closing an uncloseable gap.
