Sharing an op-ed I penned about the importance of SNAP--not just for the program's beneficiaries, but for all us. In the meantime, we're putting a lot of pressure on local food pantries--and they will certainly need our support. (TLDR: give money to your local orgs)

Many food pantries are already operating at capacity and won't be able to close the gap when the federal shutdown cuts into aid.

Fantastic op-ed from an excellent sociologist, Leah Gose, on the critical importance of SNAP and the challenge food pantries face in closing an uncloseable gap.

Guys. The Democrat got the highest votes in Pocatello’s mayoral race last night. We are looking at a runoff in December since no one hit 50% (five candidates ran) but that’s never happened in our almost-12 years here.

This is such a disappointing management decision. Not just because @leximcmenamin.com and their colleagues are excellent journalists, but because they never, ever underestimated what teen girls might find interesting or care about.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.
certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

“Bring It On Home to Me” is probably the best song I’ve ever heard. I will never get tired of it, that “if you ever, change your mind, about leaving — leaving me behind”
"When I first heard Sam Cooke’s music, I had no idea that he had a legacy, that his voice had been tragically silenced in the prime of his life or that he once sang with one of my father’s favorite Gospel groups."

Pretty heartbreaking stuff to get a massive email from my kids’ school counselor about the resources available for those families that will be hungry starting on Monday.

A huge swathe of my community is mobilizing to fund our food banks & ensure people will be able to eat when SNAP benefits lapse on Friday. Even some of our local conservative megachurches are getting involved. This crisis has definitely broken through to those who aren't terminally online.

Many food banks also accept & distribute cat and dog food.
Many rescues & shelters also have food pantries.
(This is also important, because many people will cut back on quality & volume of food they eat. In order to keep their pets safe at home.) ❤️

If you have it please donate cash to the food banks. $10 in their hands will feed more people than the $10 worth of canned goods you can buy for retail prices. Also check on your elders. Many of them will not admit they rely on these programs so grocery gift cards or a surprise bag of staples

I’ve been regularly volunteering at a food bank for about a year and please, if you want to help, consider donating cash.
For $3, they can provide 15 meals and what they can do with the money you might spend on a few cans can be converted to vastly more in fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, or meat.

Idaho has some dang good journalists too, as ProPublica knows.
