Archaeology isn't just about what happened centuries ago. It continues to explore the story of humanity up to the present day.
I think it's important to trust yourself as a writer. If your characters are doing something that you didn't expect - embrace it, that's your subconscious knowing how to fix the story.

An old wildfowler told J Wentworth Day of a 'rum owd feller' who one night came to his hut on Canvey Island, #Essex (still rustic then). He was a tall man with a sword and a winged 'helm'. He sadly said he was searching for his ship back home, then wandered away across the mudflats.

If I ever had the money, I'd open a SFF&H bookshop in Bristol with a comprehensive selection of new and classic books, a comfy reading room, a log fire, and a variety of hot beverages. Maybe a couple of shop cats, and plenty of author events.

#Writetip: To write good fiction you have to be a keen observer of reality. You have to understand how the world works in order to create your own fake one. Write stories that your readers can really connect with because a little truth goes a long way!
