Sometimes the easiest way to refresh a sci-fi trope is to flip its moral centre. Take the “chosen one” narrative: what happens when the prophecy is wrong or the hero refuses the role?
Subversion can reveal a deeper truth the trope usually hides. #Writing #SciFi #AmWriting

The original seed for Judgement came from a simple writing prompt. Without thinking about it, finish the line below;

"Susan said that..."

Take away those first three words. If you still have a working sentence, you might have the launchpad for your next idea.

Bibliosmia - that mix of paper, ink, and time itself when you pick up a book. Perfect.

As someone who spends way too long surrounded by drafts and dog-eared novels, I feel this one deeply.

New book scent or old library vibe — what’s your pick?

Archaeology isn't just about what happened centuries ago. It continues to explore the story of humanity up to the present day.

I think it's important to trust yourself as a writer. If your characters are doing something that you didn't expect - embrace it, that's your subconscious knowing how to fix the story.

Just watched A House of Dynamite. Bloody hell! Tense or what? Particularly liked the closing credit soundtrack.

Conflict and change are the engines if story. If a scene doesn't have these, it's just a diary entry.

"I can't afford an artist, so I used AI for my book cover, it was the only way." My dude, consumer AI is three years old and people have been releasing indie books for fucking ever. And I promise you, NOBODY undervalues their work the way artists do. You can get amazing work for beans. You're lazy.

One of my fave books. The chapter title 'The piper at the gates of dawn' always stuck with me.

An old wildfowler told J Wentworth Day of a 'rum owd feller' who one night came to his hut on Canvey Island, #Essex (still rustic then). He was a tall man with a sword and a winged 'helm'. He sadly said he was searching for his ship back home, then wandered away across the mudflats.

If I ever had the money, I'd open a SFF&H bookshop in Bristol with a comprehensive selection of new and classic books, a comfy reading room, a log fire, and a variety of hot beverages. Maybe a couple of shop cats, and plenty of author events.

#Writetip: To write good fiction you have to be a keen observer of reality. You have to understand how the world works in order to create your own fake one. Write stories that your readers can really connect with because a little truth goes a long way!
