A quick note on Trump's new tariff plan. It's 10 percent across the board, 125 percent (!) on China. What's the effective tariff rate? Well, China was 13 percent of imports in 2024, so you might say .13*125+.87*10 = 24.95. But imports from China will fall, so how do we adjust it? 1/

During the presidential campaign economists were united in denouncing tariffs as a regressive tax that would slow economic growth and contribute to inflation. People dismissed the tariffs, said they’d never happen.

He’s doing exactly what he said he’d do. Exactly. What. He. Said. He’d. Do.

This is true: The Trump administration said it has imposed a 10% tariff on the British Indian Ocean Territory, whose only inhabitants are the U.S. and U.K. service members at the military base on Diego Garcia.
Incredibly, this appears to be true. We tariffed our own (jointly operated with the UK) military base.
We tariffed BIOT, Mike.

BIOT. Diego fucking Garcia.

We tarrifed our own military base.

This isn’t just a moronic lie.

It’s more than an insult against an ally.

Trump is using disinformation to justify applying unwarranted & hugely mutually damaging tariffs as a tactic to try to force an ally into giving up its sovereignty.

It’s a hostile takeover attempt. Or overt economic warfare.
Trump: "We're gonna be demanding respect from other nations. Canada, we have a tremendous deficit with Canada. We're not gonna have that anymore. As you probably know, I say you can always become a state. If you're a state, we won't have a deficit, we won't have to tariff you."
