In other words, you can't. Because you know that their lives would be objectively worse under Trump or Vance.

There's bad. And there's worse.

You're choosing worse. And trying to hide behind minorities to justify doing something that you know is wrong.
No because that’s the inane choice everyone on this thread is shouting at you about.
February 16, 2026 at 10:45 PM
All right. First, let's be clear.

We are talking about a hypothetical situation here. If it comes down to Newsom vs Trump/Vance, Newsom is less horrible.

I am not saying that situation is desirable or inevitable. By all means, try to get a progressive nominated.
Won't be helping them by letting Newsom win either, so you are just blaming them for getting murdered by the state

The Left doesn't win by getting leftist candidates elected. We win through people power and direct action.

The only purpose of an election is to choose an enemy who is easier to defeat. If you can get a progressive, great! if not, choose the least horrible opponent.
February 16, 2026 at 7:06 PM
No, no. I'm saying assure the liberals that you'll hold your nose and vote for the less scummy scumbag if that's your only option.

By all means, push for someone better.

But think of it like choosing which enemy you would rather fight. Newsom is a weaker enemy than Trump.
You understand that you’re attributing more agency to leftists than liberals, yes? *You* are the ones being asked not to sell people out, and you’re refusing on the assumption that the worst possible choice is inevitable.
February 16, 2026 at 6:46 PM
The average American liberal has pretty much zero control over who gets nominated.

What they want from you is assurances that you won't sell them out to the fascists if they get stuck with someone awful.

You should offer them those assurance. You might find them more amenable to your concerns.
If I were a Democrat concerned about winning elections and was hearing that a significant number of voters wouldn’t support Gavin Newsom in 2028, I would simply stop pushing Gavin Newsom in 2026.
look if you want to freak out about people not voting newsom if he's the nominee a week before the 2028 general election, I kinda get it (but don't say you weren't warned). doing it now though is just a weird attempt to strong arm people into supporting him in the primary.

One of my black pill moments is the endless stream of liberal pricks who look at people who are suffering and say "you're not sufficiently grateful for the crumbs that really didn't improve your lives all that much."
One of my black pill moments was that Biden actually focused on lifting the lowest quartiles up at the expense of the rich and the online left screamed at him about student loan forgiveness.
The vibecession was primarily driven by lower sentiment among the upper and middle classes, not the lower classes.

If those who claim the authority of law do not obey the law, and the law does not stop them, then they do not have the authority of law, because there is no longer any law.

Vote for Tanille. She has the best platform. #cdnpoli
We in the NDP must have a plan to put people and planet first over AI.

Our plan puts a moratorium on new AI data centers, criminalizes the creation or distribution of sexualized AI deepfakes, protects users from data extractivism and shields workers from AI layoffs.

I called my (Liberal) MP's constituency office yesterday and asked the staff member (office manager?) why the Canadian government continues to sign contracts w/ companies working with ICE.

They made all kinds of excuses ... 1/2

Canadians! Sign the petition to support and protect Cuba and other countries like Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico from recent military and economic attacks by the US. Signing sends a message to PM Carney that we want him to walk his talk. #cdnpoli
Please sign this petition. If Canada truly respects human rights and the sovereignty of every nation, we must put our words into action. We must provide aid to Cuba. We must uphold the right of self-determination of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Every fascist is basically Gollum.

If you could peek into their minds, that's what you'd see: a gloomy cave where they gnaw on their own hatred.

And their spirit is a shrivelled-up, emaciated little creep.

We absolutely can afford a UBI, and we do need it, regardless of any impacts AI ends up having.

The cost of UBI is its net cost, not its gross cost. If you get $15k and pay $7k higher taxes as part of the deal, that cost is $8k not $15k.

Try calculating the costs of not doing UBI. Include fascism.
My Sunday Times piece: The idea that we will need a universal basic income because of all the jobs that will be displaced by AI is gaining traction, but it is wrong on several counts:

We can’t afford a universal basic income — and don’t need it

If AI massacres jobs, the state will never find £1.5 trillion a year to keep us going. Targeted help would be far more sensible

Anyone remotely in touch with reality knows we're beyond that, not because people are polarized, but rather people are polarized because it is impossible to deny the depth of the crisis, the inability of capitalism to meet human needs.

Socialism, or barbarism. Which side are you on?

According to Trump's new national security policy, expressing anti-capitalist views is now cause to suspect someone is a terrorist.

I'm an anti-capitalist, just FYI.

He wants us to stay quiet. We need to do the opposite.
Capitalism is ultimately an authoritarian form of economics that fosters the rise of billionaires, monopolies, purchased politics, and wealth inequality. We combat authoritarianism with democracy. Economic democracy is the path forward, not more capitalism for the wealthy at the expense of the many.

I know this is besides the point but the #1 research supported way to "get rid" of homeless people is to give them homes. It's called Housing First and it works everywhere it's tried, just like UBI.
