Just starting RF Kuang’s Katabasis and I’ve laughed out loud twice in the first 5 pages:
“…Cambridge had made her the kind of person who wanted to have read Proust, and she figured Hell was a good place to start.”

Lovely thread…
There’s a colloquial French way of saying “zero fucks given” that translates to “I’m painting my balls with the brush of indifference.” A Finnish version is “it interests me as much as a kilogram of shit.” But my favourite is from old Greek slang and it goes “flowers on my dick and bees all around.”

This thread is worth a few minutes on your 4th…”and the then the fucking British showed up…”
My mom and stepdad are from the same diaspora group as Zohran Mamdani’s dad (same like “my stepdad was kicked out of the same town and knows some of his classmates”) and apparently the New York Times doesn’t understand how diaspora works, so I am going to tell you a little about my mom’s people!

This thread might be sufficient to justify a Bluesky account…
I need the phrase (or its equivalent in everyday casual speech) of “What the fuck” in as many languages as possible.

Go.

Just finished The Potency of Ungovernable Impulses by @older.bsky.social

It took me a bit to turn my attention from the shit storm that life on earth is currently, but it was a delight. This series keeps getting better and I look forward to whatever work comes next

Ridiculous police presence blocking peaceful marchers
W Palm Police pleasant/professional (no paramilitary gear) but crossing the bridge into PB State Police raced by at excessive speed - greeted by riot ready cops
No badges/names, no communication w/ crowd & no justification for blocking protest

Start of an excellent thread, I’m starting to think this Bluesky thing is gonna work out…
Let's talk about these two department store owners: brother and sister Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld. From Newark, New Jersey.

They are random people, basically. But in the late 1920s, with fascism taking over Europe, they made a choice that profoundly changed the world: 🧵

Fantastic thread!
Pope Leo's first sermon and, uh, his using the phrase "be ever more fully a city set upon a hill" and cf'ing it to Rev 21:10 instead of any of the others before saying "many baptized Christians" are "living in a state of practical atheism" is. Well. Shots fired!

Read Pope Leo XIV's first homily as pope
During his homily, delivered in Italian, Leo XIV said that Christians must serve a world that is often hostile to their beliefs.
