yes, exactly. i understand why they would make this choice, and i can even respect it. but it is career ending, because you don’t have the nerves for what will have to come next.
anyone who is not willing to take the risk of gambling with starvation in order to save our system of government has no place in the Senate, and those who decided that they couldn't play a game with those stakes have not necessarily done anything wrong. they just have to leave.
two contradictory ideas that i hold in my head at the same time: 1) i think the threat to both SNAP recipients and federal workers is significant enough now that even bad deals are worth making to prevent further harm, and, 2) everyone who caves now should retire in shame

Wow. A bit unclear who wanted what but seems the WH may have wanted to send active duty troops to Portland, specifically sending the 82nd's ready battalion (which is usually understood as an overseas contingency force)
The messages show high-level officials in the Trump administration discussing the possible deployment of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, an infantry force that has dropped into combat zones in both World Wars, Vietnam and Afghanistan.
Trump officials discussed sending elite Army division to Portland, text messages show
A high-ranking White House official was indiscreetly texting about the Portland, Ore., planning last weekend, according to messages shared with the Minnesota Star Tribune.

this is wild: while Stephen Miller's guy was in Minnesota for his uncle's funeral, somebody was able to see his entire phone and take pictures of his Signal group chats talking about military deployments to Portland, and brought them to the Strib (gift link: www.startribune.com/trump-offici...)

Padilla: If this is how DHS responds to a senator with a question you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California.

Sen. Alex Padilla, who was just forcibly removed from a DHS press conference, is the ranking member of Judiciary’s subcommittee on immigration, citizenship, and border safety, which has “oversight of federal agencies with citizenship, asylum, refugee, and immigration enforcement responsibilities.”

one of the most insane normalized aspects of our political climate is politicians going after their own constituents in the name of anti-wokeness. what are we doing here

I know Great Barrington well and it is extremely hard to imagine any scenario on this earth in this small town that would require cops to roll out like they're going to war.

I've been working in PG for the last 2 years, where the default behavior for reads is different. Simple as explicitly committing the tx after a read but I seriously thought I was going crazy.
Spent hours pulling out my hair as to why the service I'm rewriting wasn't seeing updates in the database as soon as they happened. Took me way too long to realize that maybe it was a transaction issue.

Eeeeyup. MySQL's default isolation mode won't show new committed data until the tx is ended.
