Dining critic, D Magazine (Dallas). Turkish-American.
people have named 50+ worse complaints so far but:
They highlighted the amazing "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek"...and GOT THE NAME OF THE MOVIE WRONG.
The movie listed at #1 is so incredibly misplaced that it calls into question the veracity of the entire list. It belongs on the list, yes, but SO MUCH further down. An absolute, credibility-wrecking flub. Boo, @variety.com! Boo!

At the accidental urging of @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social I watched Big Night right before going to Lucia for dinner, and it's my favorite meal I've ever had at Lucia. 10/10 synergy

One of the ironic tragedies of the death of the traditional dining critic is that with restaurant prices what they are now, the public *needs* that kind of objective, informed service journalism more than ever.

Is angel hair pasta still super uncool, or did someone publish a contrarian "actually, angel hair is great" thinkpiece yet?

(not taking sides. real question.)

This excellent thread starts out being about food writing but I'm quoting my favorite part. I think this same insight is also true of a lot of other liberal-to-reactionary pipeline issues (e.g. transphobia).
And frankly, I think that's how most people express racism. They don't hate other cultures. They may even love them. But the moment they start to feel like theirs isn't the *default* — that they are not the center of the universe — that's when their civility starts to break down... (6/7)

Classic fan-damage here, but this is a situation where even though I don't really care about the Orioles at all I legitimately can't stand Mike Elias. He's not upholding the basic terms of the Being A Baseball Team social contract, and it sure seems like a vanity/ideology thing. What a waste.

So the intrepid @reinhart.bsky.social got to wondering how much the Luka trade tanked the local bar scene in Victory Park, and his calculations arrived at a number: at least 15% of alcohol sales.

Read his fine work, then shake your head sadly:

The Luka Effect: How Much Did One Trade Hurt Victory Park Bars and Restaurants?
We can estimate that the trade cost nearby bars and restaurants 15 to 18 percent of their alcohol sales in the months following the trade.

The Stars weren't always Dallas' team. They once had to attract attention by giving away free manure, bootlegging Blockbuster tapes onto the Jumbotron, and bringing a bison onto the rink.
Let’s Remember the Night the Dallas Stars Brought a Live Bison to Center Ice
In its early years in Dallas, the hockey team attracted attention any way it could, including sumo wrestlers and a free manure giveaway. The biggest may have come in a game against—who else?—Buffalo.
