Mildly hungover so naturally I’m outdoors at a fourth tier football match in a bleak northern industrial town where the conditions are so icily bitter that I’m on the half-time Bovril

Happy New Year! And if you’re not watching Ronan Keating on BBC1… you’ve made your first good decision of 2026 👏🏻

It’s a toss-up between Michael Portillo slightly stepping on my foot, the time I had to say “Sorry, can I just…” to Nigel Havers in order to reach past him for a sandwich in M&S Simply Food, and when I bumped into a man at the station before realising it was Peter Mandelson
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

I love my mother dearly but the ubiquity of smart phones has been the worst thing that ever happened to our relationship. I spend 90% of my time with her troubleshooting the thing for her and she spends 90% of her time with me scrolling 15-sec bursts of banal Facebook reels at full fucking volume

There’s three of us for Christmas and I’ve just made over a kilo of smoked salmon pate; in retrospect this might have been excessive

Happy Christmas, anyway x

Merry Podmas. Still hoping for Spider-Cavill as a Christmas miracle.

Tim very kindly let me host his podcast so I could interview him for the Christmas Special. Still got Merry X-Mess by Rotterdam Termination Source as a festive earworm tbh

Seems like a good time to share and email from a journalist I got a few years ago.

Me too. Also, while I appreciate this isn’t the point, I’m very much here for a crime-fighting, serial killer-obsessed codebreaker who looks like this…

Very much here for the idea of a Shared Universe uniting David Bowie's bescarfed intro to The Snowman and Paul McCartney rifling through that box of Rupert Bear annuals to the accompaniment of a sort of Coronation Street version of We All Stand Together.

Toys R Us mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe, or Joe Hart on the Match Of The Day sofa? Hard to tell.

I made some mince pies this evening, which reminded me that in my previous job I had a colleague the same age as me who had never tried a mince pie because she had assumed mincemeat was the same thing as Branston Pickle

The run that Rob Reiner went on between 1984 and 1992 is one of the most amazing hot streaks any director has ever had. Legendary stuff
