I love ‘we’re really proud of them, the way they tried’. Like they were six-year-olds in an egg and spoon race.

There’s an awful lot in my school reports that pretty much amounts to “She’s a bright child but chooses to use her powers for evil”

I think ours was this one, made by Pelham Puppets. Nobody knows how she appeared in our house.

We also used to have terrifying wooden ventriloquist’s type puppet/dummy called Daisy-May. If she’s still in the loft I’m never going in there again.

I’ve just been discussing the golly with my mum - actually a very right-on parent compared to most when we were kids - and she says she feels terrible about it now but at the time it never occurred to her what gollies *were*. She just thought of them as being like gnomes or something

Hahaha! Yes, he’s probably thinking ‘Christ, things are bad, and that’s speaking as a toy from the 1970s’

My mum tells me it was a must-have Xmas toy when they bought it for my sister and several of her friends got one too. None of this explains why it’s no longer in a bin bag in the loft along with other ancient sentimental tat and has mysteriously migrated to the cupboard where she keeps spare bedding

This one belonged to my sister. She’s 10 years older than me so I think he would have been purchased before I was born - early 70s maybe - but I vaguely remember him being with some junk in the loft when I was a kid.

I think he’d be all right were it not for his terrible eye injury

This one was my sister’s. I was aware of him as when I was a child he was in a bag in the loft with some other old stuff of hers (my sister’s 10 yrs older than me) but wasn’t expecting to see him in 2025 in the cupboard where my mum keeps spare bedding.

Yeah, this one belonged to my sister. She’s 10 years older than me so I don’t know when she got him but I’m guessing it would have been early 70s. Before I was born, certainly.

Yes, he belonged to my big sister in the early 70s. I vaguely remember him being in a bag in the loft when I was a kid but this doesn’t really explain why he’s now lurking the built-in cupboard where my mum keeps her spare bedding. Last time I saw him he was in the loft in the 1990s or something
