RIP Tatsuya Nakadai. Truly one of the greatest of all time. Incredible in Harakiri, The Face of Another and Ran, among so many others.

Once upon a time movie posters told stories and set the tone, creating a kind of visual overture. Struzan was huge part of the imaginative landscape of the 80s and 90s. RIP.
RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

This one hurts. Such a unique presence. One of those actors you just felt like you knew. People saying she was foundational to 70s American cinema are 100% right. RIP Diane

Impossible to pick a favourite Redford performance or even directing project. But I've randomly pictured him running around NYC in those jeans and tweed herring bone jacket declaring "I just read books" at least once a week for decades now.

Annual solo wargaming survey! And hey, if you enjoy Wars of Marcus Aurelius of Stilicho: Last of the Romans why not give them a mention?
🎲 Don't be *that* gamer ‼️

For 2 years, *after* we posted the results of the solo/solitaire wargaming survey, we'd get a pile of comments lamenting that "No one told *ME* about this!!"

Well, here's your 2025 invite – go vote for your favorites!

Nashville and Killer of Sheep are the two greatest films ever made about the United States.
"Nashville is a portrait of the United States on the eve of the Bicentennial, but at times it seems to be describing the United States fifty years later. I saw it on a big screen during its re-release and was knocked out again by its audacity and perceptiveness."

WeTransfer is no longer useable to transfer any work files in my biz (film & tv). And I sure as heck won’t be sending personal files this way. Anybody know any safe alternatives?
Bye forever, WeTransfer.

The Elementals starts as a droll southern gothic horror-comedy but builds to something genuinely terrifying. Some may bump on the slow burn pacing & some aspects haven’t aged well, but that ending is an all-timer. Squint hard enough & you might see shades of Beetlejuice (co-written by McDowell).
Happy birthday to the late, great Michael McDowell, who would have been 75 today. To celebrate (and to get you reading his great books), we're doing a FLASH ONE-DAY SALE on two of his best novels, THE ELEMENTALS and COLD MOON OVER BABYLON, both just $2.99 today only on Kindle worldwide!

These 90s stock photos have better lighting, composition and art direction than many TV shows and movies today.
Today I discovered that people have been uploading old stock photo CD-ROMs to the Internet Archive and now I'm obsessed with the mid-'90s business-core aesthetic.

Legacy media not bothering to do the absolute minimum to slow its death spiral.
We are looking into how this made it into print as we speak. It is not editorial content and was not created by, or approved by, the Sun-Times newsroom. We value your trust in our reporting and take this very seriously. More info will be provided soon.

We’re living in an AI hallucination
This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?

Good morning. Today is National Indie Bookstore Day. Instead of shopping at Amazon, B&N, etc give stores like Vortex Books & Comics, Park Books, Midtown Scholar, Butcher Cabin, Bucket of Blood, Poisoned Pen, Cupboard Maker, Mysterious Galaxy, etc your business. Most have online stores, as well!
