while I am on my high horse, the argument that "LLMs don't know anything, the things they get right are because that's most of what the see people say" is .. kind of correct but also *exactly what humans do most of the time* like I promise you did not critically research every fact in your brain

This is more or less exactly how the (still default) "generative syntax" model of cognitive linguistics tells you humans learn the rules for their language, and the academics who "know how LLMs work" and bang on about "just stochastic parrots" need to make room for that in their worldview
Transformer LMs get pretty far by acting like ngram models, so why do they learn syntax? A new paper by sunnytqin.bsky.social, me, and @dmelis.bsky.social illuminates grammar learning in a whirlwind tour of generalization, grokking, training dynamics, memorization, and random variation. #mlsky #nlp
Sometimes I am a Tree: Data Drives Unstable Hierarchical Generalization
Language models (LMs), like other neural networks, often favor shortcut heuristics based on surface-level patterns. Although LMs behave like n-gram models early in training, they must eventually learn...

gunpowder, treason and plot
is literally the worst mnemonic rhyme I know of. 'Fifth' is not in a structural rhyming position, and it is the only 'i' vowel for leagues, so there's not even any useful assonance.

Amazingly regular hand, but with an interesting thick stroke on the upper left of the 'a', making it look like a mini capital. That's also a pretty fly capital 'S'!
Colophon in red ink from a recycled unidentified MS by Johannes Gredinger, completed on the “feria vi” after the feast of S. John “ad portam Latinam” (12 May?). The exact year is masked by the book’s spine label (@stabiberlin.bsky.social, Cs 6738)
