I have an MA in archaeology and run a blog called Living in the Longue Durée about ancient history and whatever else. This profile is mostly funny observations about history and science.

So I’ve completed my latest project: a run-through of the history of de-extinction, exploring the many methods that have been tried and treating it as a social phenomenon around science rather than just a snazzily marketed science topic. From Nazi cattle to modern questionable corporate claims.

Despite this truncated rant, Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple are some of the most incredible archaeological tourism I’ve ever done.

I love how Egyptian temple complexes can show so clearly additions and revisions across vast swathes of time. There really is a longevity of importance in these sites.
I will say that the family and friend demand for photos is one of the harder parts of travel for me. I’m not a natural picture-poster and I don’t always know what to concoct as a whimsical caption that can feign depth while failing to capture my actual in-the-moment feelings. Maybe tomorrow.

Shoutout to my 80-year-old grandpa who sees fit to point out all the penises, attached to gods or as hieroglyphs, on Egyptian temples to me to laugh about it.

We’re not even blood-related and I think I inherited my love of dick jokes from him and only discovered it now.

I love the casual religiosity of the Arab world because some guy on the street will have a ringtone that is some gorgeous Qur’an recitation and then he’ll just pick up his phone and immediately begin tearing into someone in an argument.

Evidence of the quarrying and export of sandstone blocks at Gebel el-Silsila to remind you that ancient astronaut hypothesis is still dumb as shit.

-Workers’ marks for quarrying teams.
-Tool-sharpening marks.
-A hitching site at the old boat ramp.
-Some schmuck chiseling out rocks.

The ancient Egyptian Egyptian Egyptian were so real for deciding that sometimes to pluralize noun noun noun, they would just write them three time time time.

(They have several ways to do it in writing or just leave it implied but this one is my favorite.)

I identified an offering inscription off of the Ptolemaic temple of Horus and Sobek at Kom Ombo today and the guide looked at me like a guard in Cyrodiil.

Anyway, more sacred crocodiles of Sobek for those who appreciate the fine things in life.

I had a dream where the Toy Story cast was joined by an Upper Paleolithic effigy figure from a museum who was some kid’s toy in the Pleistocene.

I ain’t gonna write that bad fanfic so that idea is free for any of you to use.

Anyone wanna serve ten years for Roman citizenship?
New Sci. Am. article looks at sediment in ancient Roman sewer systems and found that Romans guarding Hadrian's wall were full of whipworms, roundworms, and Giardia. And there was no cure, either. You were infected for life.

Ancient Romans Guarding Hadrian’s Wall Were Riddled with Worms and Parasites
Romans living in ancient Britain were plagued by intestinal parasites, all of which are spread by fecal contamination

Unfortunately for those of you stuck in a room with me, I think about both Egypt and Rome every day.

Anyway, I really like Trajan’s Kiosk at Philae, started in the reign of Augustus and continued into the reign of Trajan, who is depicted inside in the role of pharaoh.

GUYS, I WENT TO ELEPHANTINE AND PHILAE TODAY AND I SUCCESSFULLY READ SOME HIEROGLYPHIC INSCRIPTIONS. I FOUND MONTUHOTEP AND MENKHEPERRE THUTMOSE AND READ THEIR TITLES AND SOME REGNAL YEARS.

Mostly at Elephantine though. The Philae walls go insane. Damn Ptolemies.

Merry (Western) Christmas Eve from Nubia!

Here’s the Egyptian temple complex at Philae (since reconstructed at a new location from when they built the Aswan High Dam) at night.

Tomorrow we’re gonna go stomp around Elephantine.

I posted this in the language Discord server and another person said, “wow, Jacob is cute.” One more for the simp gang, I guess.

Anyway, another image of me with the Giza pyramids again because, holy shit, I love them.

One thing I do love about the Amarna-period art style is that normally I can’t keep the official portrait images of the pharaohs straight but I always do know exactly which mofo is Akhenaten.

Atenism is the one true religion, by the way.

Report: the new Grand Egyptian Museum fucking slaps.

-Ramesses II flanked by Ptah and Sekhmet.
-A mummified sacred crocodile of Sobek.
-A throne from early in the reign of Tutankhamun with Amarna-period imagery.
-The funerary boat of Khufu.

Damn, I didn’t know triangles got that big.

Question for plumbing experts I guess.

Travel enthusiasts know that in certain countries being able to flush toilet paper is a given while in others it’s a mistake that destroys toilets. On a mechanical level, why is this and why does it seem nationally one way or the other everywhere?

Hi from Cairo. I’ve now been to Africa. Two continents remain.

Also you know you’re in the Middle-East when your taxi driver takes three separate phone calls in 30 minutes and offers you a Kleenex, a cigarette, and tea.

Guys, if I become a deified god-king, I think you should all write my name after apotheosis as 𒀭Jacob𓀭. I want to have not one but two divine determinatives because it seems cool to have them at both front and back.

As I sit here waiting and doing hieroglyphic exercises out of my book, I want you to know I am handwriting these hieroglyphs. I don’t particularly want to post them right now but trust me that they look atrocious.

Four other Paleozoic animals before Dimetrodon is actually unprecedented in the history of the zoo-builder genre. I feel the need to point that out.
surprise! the first permian animals of #prehistorickingdom have arrived: diictodon and diplocaulus! these are both vivarium species
