Seems to me that a big competitive advantage could be gained in a few years by the companies that hire, develop and invest in young talent now - while the other companies look round their offices at bored old twats all running out of ideas and watching their businesses die around them

The switch to a July-May season for the #MLS seems sensible for many reasons, and I think this is an important one: MLS matches are played in significantly higher temperatures compared to the top 🇪🇺 leagues.

Also, judging by those recent CPL highlights, snow football looks awesome, bring it on

My latest blog post "From Data to Wisdom: Playing Football’s Information Game at the Right Level" explores how football clubs can move from simply collecting data to making better, evidence-based decisions.

A study earlier this month found that America’s more fragmented media landscape — particularly the takeoff of cable news — accounts for fully one third of the increase in cultural conflict in the US since the year 2000.

As someone who's had to write code around MLS competition format, I can attest that best-of-3 is the worst thing in the history of football and MLS should be banned by FIFA as a fair punishment.

Today, when Elena Rybakina won the year end championships, with her now-unbanned (“allegedly”) abusive situationship back as her coach, she REFUSED TO TAKE A PHOTO WITH THE WTA CEO 🎾

I don’t think I can be happy for her success!!! I hate that Vukov is back in the picture!!

Spurs vs United was so rancid that both clubs should refund their supporters and the millions who watched their poor attempt at playing the beautiful game

This is really good writing about using data to communicate, and hits some of the things I don’t like about the ways soccer statistics are created and used

This has been super gross to witness. Arsenal fans putting Ohio State fans to shame in the “Taking a compliment as an insult and being super toxic about it” department.

For Awful Announcing, I wrote about how the relentlessness of Saudi Arabia's sports ventures is wearing down critics, with thoughts from a few of them: awfulannouncing.com/orig/saudi-a...
Saudi Arabia's sportswashing campaign has already won
With more sports leagues partnering with Saudi Arabia, its sportswashing campaign to gain mainstream access appears to be a rousing success.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

this is really good stuff from @gelliottmorris.com

the core issue is that polling in the subjunctive is dumb. if you ask people to imagine things, people will imagine things

when you ask questions about actual, material acts of political violence, rates of support run incredibly low
Glad Morris is on this issue. Obviously political violence in our society and the openness to it is a big issue. BUT I do think a lot of these polls, intentionally or not, have a way of amplifying very hypothetical questions. Or from a different perspective ... www.gelliottmorris.com/p/most-polls...
Why most polls overstate support for political violence
Misperceptions about the popularity of violence increase public support for it — but you can help change that.

Gridlines >>> axes

Almost always, gridlines are better than axes. At least for vertical axes.

I admit, vertical axes are the default option, and they have been around for centuries, so they are very well known. But your typical vertical axis also has some downsides.

Playing goal kicks short has usually yielded better returns, but the gap in NP xG difference between short and long GKs might be shrinking in most top 🇪🇺 leagues...except for the PL, where the gap seems to be widening despite an uptick in the % of long GKs, which would buck a very persistent trend
