Opinions mine
The switch to a July-May season for the #MLS seems sensible for many reasons, and I think this is an important one: MLS matches are played in significantly higher temperatures compared to the top 🇪🇺 leagues.

Also, judging by those recent CPL highlights, snow football looks awesome, bring it on

Playing goal kicks short has usually yielded better returns, but the gap in NP xG difference between short and long GKs might be shrinking in most top 🇪🇺 leagues...except for the PL, where the gap seems to be widening despite an uptick in the % of long GKs, which would buck a very persistent trend

If we zoom out on the trend of court speed at the slams in the past 25 years (using moving averages), we see the USO's 2025 data point is continuing a significant downward trend in recent years, after a peak in 2021. Sinner now holds the two faster slams while Alcaraz holds the two slower ones (2/2)

With another Sincaraz final in the books, I was curious to see the @tennisabstract.bsky.social court speed rating, and apparently, the USO has slowed down to just below tour average in 2025. Of course, in this case, Alcaraz's win was so comprehensive that conditions were not a factor (1/2)

His career stats say his shot stopping is 4.5% above average (goals prevented / PSxG faced), so I think two things can be true:
- Shot stopping metrics are not robust (also 23/24 is a big positive outlier)
- The eye test might lead to over-weighting glaring mistakes that get washed out in the avg

Absolutely unserious, unhinged and fun football match

Tried to replicate this approach for title race: there's a small indication that +att and -def is better than vice versa, but I think this approach is less effective here than for relegation:
- x4 fewer teams
- Positive outcome is satisfied by only one team per season
- Arbitrary points threshold

The fact that these two players will likely have moved to the PL for very similar fees by the end of the transfer window, with such stark differences in their underlying production is...interesting

Time to update the Sincaraz timeline, and score one for the argument that court speed is particularly relevant context in this matchup 👀

The last five matches between Sinner and Alcaraz have all been played in slower-than-average conditions. This is relevant when discussing Alcaraz's 4-1 advantage in this period. Of course, that's not to say Alcaraz can't and won't beat Sinner in faster conditions (he already has)
