Formerly a sustainable finance guy who's also not fond of pandemics or genocides or fascists.

On here for as long as it helps us organise a centre left response to the polycrisis.

The French establishment has a dilemma: compromise with the left (reversing Macron's pension/tax reforms) to stabilise government & block Le Pen. Or maintain austerity & risk political chaos that makes FR unreliable to allies & enables a far-right victory that undermines NATO/EU defense cooperation.
America is abandoning its first and oldest ally.

To sum up, a US president is going to war without congressional authorization against a sovereign nation that has not attacked or threatened it, and is doing so like a thief in the night, with no explanation for the American people or the world. It is all so unimaginable that it strains credulity.

Every American should be ashamed of who we are and what we have become as a nation today. We have a long history of military misadventures and even crimes but the attacks we have been conducting on Venezuela are among the most wanton, egregious and least defensible acts we’ve ever conducted.

I talk a lot about AI and "male loneliness" as a lack of distress tolerance for the messy business of dealing with other humans, but the rejection (most noticeable in MAGAts and anti-vaxxers, but spreading to, sigh, everything) of the *idea of expertise* is a symptom of the same problem. (thread)
I hate the whole "listen to every day Americans instead of educated elites" crap but at the same time I do think we sometimes fail to acknowledge that a lot of the academic elites are actually full of shit too. There are plenty of PhDs out there who believe false and damaging shit.

The story of Europe’s economic decline while US is 'soaring' is everywhere.

But it is wrong. It is a myth.

Europe delivers more leisure, longer life expectancy, less inequality than the US.

Gabriel Zucman dismantles the myths.
Decline, what decline? The myth of dying Europe
There is a widespread view that, by comparison with the USA, Europe is in economic and social decline. But, Zucman argues, it's not true

It doesn't take much to see this spectrum is a fantasy:

- Trump, Farage and the far right are a clear threat to democracy while Mamdani, Polanski and the left are not
