What
URGENT: FlyBase has lost practically all its funding overnight; even user fees are tied up in denied grant funding. 🤬🤯

Any lab using @flybase.bsky.social please donate using the link in post below.

This incredible community, on whose backs our #Drosophila labs depend, can't be left out to dry.
My lab studies bacterial infections. We spend a lot of time looking at (or for) species-specific genetic and genomic databases for hosts and microbes. FlyBase is the best of all—there is literally no comparison. Its existence is under threat. Please donate.

How bad will it be? Catastrophic.

Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.

But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.

Speak up now before it is too late.

The Republican administration has halted all student (and postdoc etc) VISA interviews.

I've written a lot about soft power here. The attacks on foreign students in the US not only undercuts the funding stream for US universities; they hemorrhage US soft power.
Trump team pauses new student visa interviews as it weighs expanding social media vetting
It’s the latest salvo against universities, many of whom rely heavily on foreign students for funds.

“Cutting basic science doesn’t save money.”
America’s long-term growth is at stake. Congress is weighing sweeping FY2026 cuts to fundamental science, including $18 billion from the NIH and $5 billion from the NSF.

In the long run, these cuts will cost the economy billions.

The American people do not want us to slash cancer research in order to give more tax breaks for billionaires.

EU augments opportunities for scientists around the world to launch or re-launch their careers in Europe.
Europe’s choice is clear.

To put science at the heart of its economy.

To become the home of scientific freedom and collaboration.

And to welcome talent from all over the world.

I’m glad to present the first elements of our Choose Europe Initiative.

Deep cuts to EPA, CDC, FDA, NIH, NSF, NOAA, USDA, education & more will damage health and shorten life spans, especially w/ cuts to healthcare for those w/ limited means.

Is this the goal, to reduce "entitlements" by killing people? Well, it sure won't make the wealthy any more comfortable.
