Longtime climate negotiator for France, sometimes EU, helped on Paris Agreement at COP21, advised COP28, chaired the UNFCCC SBSTA for a couple of years. Keen to see greatly strengthened action and collaboration on climate mitigation and adaptation.

Preliminary data suggests that the global average increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration in 2024 will be a record.

Not just a little record, but 25% higher than the previous record.

(This is the global average, as opposed to Moana Loa)

I have been saying for a long time that we need to reduce the space given to negotiation and find ways to make the UNFCCC process more relevant to supporting implementation and overcoming barriers to action. I have put some ideas in this article: www.linkedin.com/pulse/from-n...
From negotiation to an implementation forum during the COP
It’s easy to criticise climate COPs: too much talk, not enough action, too many participants, lobbyists and greenwashing, … There is truth behind such criticism, although many often fail to recognise ...

These are troubling times for anyone concerned about the climate – and that ought to be just about everyone on the planet. Global temperatures have hit record highs, extreme events are multiplying.

So, a question on whether climate change might play a role in record high temperatures is not "on-topic" ...
NOAA scientists refuse to link warming weather to climate change

Parabéns, good luck to André Corrêa do Lago ! A great choice to lead COP30, a huge challenge ahead.

I have a new paper in Dialogues on Climate Change exploring climate outcomes under current policies. I find that we are likely headed toward 2.7C by 2100 (with uncertainties from 1.9C to 3.7C), and that high end emissions scenarios have become much less likely.

Trump’s executive order to take the US out of the Paris Agreement – again – was no surprise but remains bad news since it would have been better for the US to remain an active participant in the global fight against climate change.

There are moments when it might be tempting to give in to despair. 2024 was the warmest year on record, the first time we have seen the global average temperature go more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. climate.copernicus.eu/global-clima...

I'm a day late, but 15 years ago yesterday was the final day of COP15 in Copenhagen. This photo captures exactly how I felt that day. Many things went wrong at that conference, but I drew three main lessons from that failure
December 20, 2024 at 1:44 PM
It is now virtually certain that 2024 will be the warmest year on record and that the global average temperature will exceed 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels. That underlines the need to massively strengthen efforts to keep warming as close as possible to 1.5°C and well under 2°C
Did you miss the C3S Climate Bulletin?

🌡️ After November data, 2024 is virtually certain to become the warmest year on record.

❄️ Antarctic sea ice extent: Record low for November, 10% below average

My reaction to COP29? A mix of relief and frustration. Relief that the process did not collapse, that important results were finalised, including on finance and carbon markets. Multilateralism is shaky but continues to function.

Yesterday’s drafts from the #COP29 presidency satisfied no-one but that was to be expected – work was unfinished, everyone recalled their priorities and objectives and stressed what they could not accept
November 22, 2024 at 9:34 AM
It is good to see the set of draft negotiating texts produced overnight in Baku that provide a basis for the last rounds of negotiation to reach agreement at #COP29. It is also daunting given how many issues remain to be resolved.

It seems that a passing comment I made at the end of my personal reflections on the state of play at COP29 at the end of the first week has been taken out of context and turned into something it was not intended to be bsky.app/profile/pwat...
The results of the first week of COP29 are decidedly messy. Some thoughts after watching this from afar over the last few days.

Despite hopes that we may be close to peak global CO2 emissions, we are still not there, as shown by the latest Global Carbon Budget – many thanks to all who contribute to putting together this vital, but sobering analysis.
📢Global Carbon Budget 2024📢

Despite some predicting a peak in global fossil CO2 emissions, we estimate growth of 0.8% [-0.3% to 1.9%] in 2024. Maybe a peak next year?

Is it all bad news, or can we find some good news?
