Hello, I’m Nyika. I’m a neurodivergent 30-something newly living in Auckland, Aotearoa NZ. I am in the first year of studying studying for a PhD in neurodiversity, the transition to adulthood, the neoliberal idea of ‘normal’, and critical pedagogy.
Think I’m too worried about inadvertently upsetting people to do a starter pack.

Just submitted a crossword I've been working on to a newspaper. Obviously VERY unlikely they'll use it, but I had a huge amount of fun.

I need an incredibly specific shade of yarn for something so I idly considered driving out south to the big independent craft shop this afternoon. Except they close at 3 on a weekend so I guess I won’t be doing that.

Random thought really, but I wonder if school PE is less competition-based these days. I really, really disliked all sport because I am really, really slow because of having dyspraxia, and it took until I was in my 30s to realise it didn’t have to be a race (that I was going to lose).

I have to say, as a man with two mothers, I find the derisive deployment of language like "lesbian" and "lover" by those on the far right who are trying to justify Renee Good's death particularly disgusting and dehumanizing. These women. They are wives. They are a family. That's it.

Interview with Paul from the Chuckle Brothers in the Guardian asks if he'd ever like to do Shakespeare.

He says, "To me, or not to me, that is the question."

I think something I had not really realised, which is silly in retrospect, is just how precarious life as an international student is. Especially in terms of needing to constantly find money for things that you’re not entitled to, like certain medical care, or permission to stay in the country.

Reading a methodology book about sensory ethnography at the moment and it’s actually really interesting. The holy grail really, a research methods book that is interesting to read.

45 y/o, in a nightclub for first time in years. Young lad burst into the toilets & caught me furtively trying to open a little ziploc bag. He said "just a heads up, the bouncers come in here to check for drugs". Couldn't tell him it was my bag of googly eyes, to stick on a poster

VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE: there is a video of Pleakley the talking tūi www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
'Yeah boy': Meet Pleakley, Ōtorohanga Kiwi House's talking tūī
While it's not unheard of for tūī to mimic car alarms and the like, birds that talk are relatively rare.

Also just telling Dan which Belle and Sebastian songs refer to Kelvingrove Park and jfc you don’t realise how deep your special interests go until those kinds of moments.

Fml, because I have declared mild mental health stuff and ADHD, they only gave me a 1 year visa, and I need to save up $850 out of thin bloody air to stay in the country. I'd forgotten how much it was. It's not fair.

We listened to an episode of This American Life the other week in which Michelle Navarro talked about life in Chicago now ICE are regularly raiding her neighbourhood and taking her friends. One of the most harrowing things I've ever listened to. Abolish ICE. www.thisamericanlife.org/875/i-hate-m...
